I'm really excited about going through steelhead season with a fly rod, I've gotten small ones with salmon eggs but I hope to get my first on a fly rod this winter!
Btw, if you have any suggestions that would be appreciated.

I'd suggest you start with some small nymph imitations,in the fall I like to use stonefly nymphs of different sizes and colors. A Michigan wiggler is another popular stealhead fly and you can seldom go wrong with an egg imitation,I make 1 out of Krystal flash that looks just like a small cluster of eggs and this can be deadly on trout if the salmon are actively spawning.
My go-to fly though would be a black eggsucking leech with an orange egg on it's nose, drift that by spawning Salmon and the males just go crazy and smash them.Always seems to be the males so I dont feel bad about fishing spawning Salmon,of course Great Lakes Salmon dont rely on spawning to reproduce as they're a put and take fish and most are hatchery raised.

Good luck and use a stout rod,I use an 8wt whenever there's Salmon in the rivers because anything lighter and you risk breaking a rod...... been there done that.... lost a prized Fenwick to a 20lb or so Salmon, landed the fish and as I went to remove the hook my rod exploded. Lesson learned, since then I only use beater rods when fishing Steelies as there usually big Coho's or Chinooks in the rivers at those times.

Fall fishing is almost upon us. Here the leaves are ever so slightly tinted yellow and red. I recommend anyone who loves smallie fishing come down to Elkhorn creek this fall, it is right here in Central Kentucky. One of my new favorite spots <S>. I originally went to Green River Lake or Dale Hollow for my Smallmouth Bass fix, but Elkhorn is better, IMHO.

bailey, when shore fishing (I used to do a lot in the UK) its best to fish the tide up (theory is the small fish come in lookiing for food, and the bigger fish follow as it gets deeper). Also early morning or dusk/night (not sure thats germaine in the US, but is for the uk).

I can teach ya to off the ground cast, and once you've got that down, I'll show you how to pendulum cast too - a good pendulum will take ya out to around the 170+ area - the top boys are hitting 300+ - but I'm not one of them lol.....

Clip down rigs are useful too - if my uk fish gear gets here, I'll slip a couple into my bag - assuming we can get the road trip in - so you can have them to copy etc.......

This ill take ya up on Gpwurzel!! Got the PM ya sent, Hope you can make it to the Right side of the country some time soon sir  <S>

Well I got my first steelhead today. I was using a spoon and after about an hour I hooked one of them about 20 feet from shore, it took about 2 mins to get it in.

After about a month of not being able to fish, from seriously spraining my ankle getting into the boat and the nasty weather, I made it out yesterday for a full day of salmon fishing.

Fall colors are starting to show as I made my way up the river.  I love fall, it's my favorite time of year, but I really hate what comes after it.  :cry

Was nice day out on the lake, which was a change as of late.  The salmon are starting to stage at the river mouth, so got to stay close to port (which was a good thing later in the day!)  Seems I wasn't the only one looking to get some fishing in.  Until about midday the area was crawling with boats, made trolling by myself a bit more challenging.  :joystick:

Caught a few King salmon, this one being my best for the day.  Still haven't figured out how to find the monsters yet, but hopefully someday I will.  This one is still silver, but a lot they are catching now have really darkened up as they prepare to make the run up the river.

I was just about to call it a day and had brought up my first rigger and was getting it stowed away when my engine quit.  :headscratch:  After taking a look to see if it was something obvious, I figured I better get help.  Called 911 and the sheriff's marine patrol came out and gave me a tow.  Not sure who's boat that is, but the sheriff's boat had been left unplugged so it wouldn't start.  I have to give them credit though, they got out there real fast.  Was no more than 15 mins till the tow boat reached me and from the time my engine quit till I was tied up at the marina was no more than an hour.  :salute

Well now I get to look forward to spending even more money on my boat.   :(  But hopefully they get it fixed soon so I can go back out next weekend, since it won't be long until I will have to pull my boat.  This salmon fishing is addictive.

My wife, father, and I headed up to Lake Champlain for a pike fishing charter this past weekend.  Probably the last chance we'll have this year to do some serious fishing, and a trip that I desperately needed.  After two weeks worth of cluster headaches and a few tooth abscesses and infections, I was sick as a dog but wasn't going to miss this for anything.

The action was intense and furious, with the three of us catching 59 fish in 8 hours, plus a few that were lost before we could land them.  My wife, by far, caught the most fish, and the biggest fish.  I had one that might've topped her up to the boat before it spat the hook out.  My wife said that's because it was expecting to be reeled in by her, and had to gag when it saw my ugly mug :D

This was our second charter this year with Captain Mickey Maynard of www.lakechamplainangler.com, and I highly recommend him.  If you're ever in the Adirondacks region, he's well worth the extra time it takes to get to Plattsburgh.  He's a great guy, and I've always got a great bang for my buck.

Anyway, here's some pictures:
