New Icon Mode/Aircraft limitations
« on: July 20, 2010, 01:52:07 AM »
For those of us who want a little more realism, request two things:

1. An icon mode available under preferences (like the tracers on/off) that enables a more realistic icon mode akin to that used in scenarios.  I believe the icon range was 3.0 to distinguish friend foe and 600 or 800 to determine subtype.  I was amazed at how much bona-fide tension the little tweak added to the experience.

2. Realistic aircraft limitations. Also selectable under options. We can rip our gear off if we so please but what about flaps? While it is understood that the "pilot" has the sense to raise the flaps when approaching limiting speed there are a few things that offset this in my book. 1. It seems to me that this would often be forgotten in the heat of battle, even with experienced pilots.  2. The use of flaps is typical in the MA, quite standard across most airframes- I doubt this was the case in real life to the same degree.  Seems gamey.  Having to pay attention to your plane helps to know it. Like the difference between a manual transmission and an automatic- it adds to the experience.

Just a couple ideas for those who feel like shooting themselves in the foot :salute

1. I'm not sure I understand what you mean, but you can press cntr + I to swich icon modes.

2. Would you really memorize the speed of each notch of flaps for each aircraft?

1. As it is now we can switch between "Normal, plane, friendly and off" by toggling icons.  If the proposed option were enabled there would be NO icon till D3.0 in "Normal" mode.
2. Yes, that's exactly what you'd have to do. At least each aircraft you wanted to fly successfully. If you don't like it you don't need to choose it in options.

What would be the difference  between .d 3k and friendly only?

If you're going for realism, go  all the way.

So your saying that we should give pilots on option of having either the way it is right now or have the flaps rip off when your overspeeding?

If so it just be unfair to people who go for most realism.

Reason being the limitations of playing on a computer. Pixels just aren't the same as RL hence the middleground.

Hence the CHOICE.
Break break.  Had another thought on the subject you're bound to like even less! Shouldn't flaps be treated like the stall limiter?  I mean it aids Noob accessibility but he does not max-perform his aircraft.  An even better idea would be to lower the flap availability speed 5-10 kts for each notch unless "realistic flaps" was selected.   :devil

I'd like to see an icon mode with nothing but the distance, no plane type, no name.

I keep on saying that about gv's, give me the distance, I would be getting kills then  :uhoh.

I've always found the auto-retracting flaps on aircraft that weren't equipped with them odd.  I say make it like the stall limiter, and engine governor.  You can chose to have them auto but sacrifice a bit of the envelope, or have them manual but risk damage if you don't properly manage them.
To each their pwn.

Not gonna happen any time soon unless someone can change HiTech's mind. It's not appropriate for the main arenas were 99% of the new guys start out, and we all know few if any RTFM before they hop into easyville and grab a Spit or Pony..
