Riding along with trainers
« on: July 28, 2010, 10:20:19 AM »
Was riding along with Grizz a few times last week in his favorite planes. 109k4, 262, ta152 to see what I could learn and was filming of course :D Thanks Grizz, nice runs. One of the things that would be really helpful when ur riding along with a "trainer" or anybody who can teach you something would be to hear the sound of his throttle work and flap work. Also when he shoots to be able to see those hits or tracers. I watched the films he posted about leading the 30mm in the 109k4  and watched him doing it from his plane but I wish I could of heard him when he was shooting, flapping, throttling the planes so I could learn even more. So basically would like to be able to see and hear same thing from riding along then when you are doing it yourself in your plane. Maybe it's not possible, just checking    ;)

Personally I would love it if an observer could see everything that was happening.
Throttle, flaps, gauges, guns, tracers, the whole enchillada.

I suspect the problem becomes a network bandwidth issue.
But I admit I'm just guessing.

Riding along is good now, but it could become a whole lot better "if" that is possible.
And that is a question only HT can answer.

One feature from that other game I really found useful in training was the ability to slave the observer to the views of the pilot. This combined with the ability to see what the pilot was doing would be awesome.

Instead of just mirroring via sound and instrument display I would prefer a HUD type display showing throttle, flap, Acceleration (G), Airspeed and any other useful parameter.

Live in the cockpit and available in the film viewer after the fact.

It'd be interesting to see how much of an effect lag has too, especially since we're talking about observing some pretty time-specific aspects.  I wonder if we could verify it by comparing films from the pilot's as well as the rider's perspective?

Due to lag, the "pilots" plane shouldn't be where/when the "rider" see's it, and neither should the "targets" plane.  We'd be talking about three similar but different realities, instead of the normal two (assuming a 1 v 1 fight).

I'd expect it to be worse than what we see in regards to the collision model.  It'd be from the third person's perspective.

When I've ridden along with other pilots, I've been able to "see" the time-distortion that lag throws into the equation.  The pilot's maneuvering and firing and the associated kills are oftentimes (always?) a bit off.

I'd think that learning the specific timing of firing/leading especially, and throttle and flap manipulation to a lesser extent could actually be adversely effected by trying to learn it as a ride-along, even if it were possible.

I think ride-alongs can be very valuable in a broad sense, but I doubt it in a fine sense.
I know that when I give ride-alongs, I try to "narrate" my control inputs and firing to give my back-seat rider an idea of what I'm up to.
