Matrox Triple head 2 go Graphics expansion module
« on: April 15, 2010, 10:08:25 PM »
I plan on purchasing the Matrox triple head 2 go graphics expansion module and three LCD monitors. Can anyone give me any suggestions or advice before I buy?  I plan on using three 22 inch Samsung Sync master 2233SW 1920x1080p Widescreen monitors (Response time 5ms).

Should I purchase the Digital edition or the DP edition?
Any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated.  I do have the system and graphics card on my puter to support this. (AMD Phenon black Quad core w/ NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX 8 gig ram)

The max resolution TH2G can display is 5040x1050(3x1680x1050), or at least it was when I got mine. I'm not sure whether it's been upgraded or not.

I'm not sure what the advantage is in getting the DP edition over the Digital. Obviously the DP edition will plug into your monitors DisplayPorts, assuming those Samsung 2233SW's have DisplayPorts. I use the Digital Edition plugged in with standard DVI ports.

It'd be a good idea to browse around here if haven't yet.

Try to get monitors that have small border frames. This makes the least amount of overlap if you line it up well. Mine's been working great for about a year now. <S>

all5x,

Hey, I just bough the Matrox and 3x 25" monitors w/ 2ms respond time. I won't be able to test it out til next week. I know that you have this a bit before me. Base on your experience with it, do you have any tips on setting it up or best setting to make it work well for Ace High II?

How would you set up TrackIR for this? I'm imagining looking at the left monitor = looking at 6 view on left side vice versia for the right monitor. I'm just going to assume that it would be a bit different to set up TrackIR for this over the normal 1 monitor setup?

Matrox triple head vs ATI Radeon 5870 Eyefinity with 3 monitors? Is there an advantage to one set up over the other? I just purchased 3 Dell 24" full HD monitors on sale ($189 each) and was leaning toward a new computer system with the ATI card. Cost of the 5870 is comparable to the triplehead without having to make room for additional hardware. Which is better and why?

Actually, it wouldn't be as much as difference as one would first imagine, Yenny.  First, using 3 monitors means you'll change your FOV setting in Aces High to anywhere from 130 to 145, depending on preference.  That means you will, at all times, see that wide a swath of in-game real estate, regardless of whether your are looking forward, to the sides (over your wings) or to the rear view.  Given that larger FOV, you don't really need to move your head further than you would if you just used one monitor (which is typically set for about 90 dgs FOV). The wider FOV takes care of part of the problem right there.

So you would adjust your head-tracking settings to show your (using the clock-face metaphor) 5/6 or your 7/6 views at roughly the edges of your main monitor (or even less).  Setting them beyond that, to display those views on a side monitor, is unnecessary and frankly, counter-productive.    That's because setting your 5/6 or 7/6 views (let's call it "over the shoulder view") at roughly the edges of your monitor will naturally allow the side monitors to display your full 6 view without requiring more head movement beyond the main monitor edges (remember... FOV).

Bear in mind that you also need to set up your TIR or FreeTrack profile for most efficiency.  Sometimes it takes a while to dial in the correct curves for smooth and natural tracking like that (it did for me anyway), but it's well worth it.
