Disco and firewall message.
« on: August 05, 2010, 05:53:36 PM »
OK, I’m on and flying for an hour, uneventfully.  Then I get the UDP/TDP message, then dumped to Windows.

I try to get right back in, without changing anything and I get “Unable to connect for version checking.  Please check all firewall settings.”

Turning off my firewall completely gets me back in.

This is not the first time.  It happens about every ten days (no precise record).

Have you enabled AH in your firewall? I have to do this with every update.

Are you using any type of port range forwarding?

Yes.  I was able to get in and fly multiple times since the last update, and for an hour prior to this dump.

Since I have no clue what you are talking about, I doubt it.  I have a cable modem to a router then a hard line (not wireless) to the computer.

Which firewall is it?
Symatec (spelled correctly?)

Skuzzy is telling you the truth. If it was me (since I hate everything Norton Symantec and McAfee) I would reformat and install Windows clean but thats your call.

The Port Range Forwarding is part of your Router setup usually under the Applications & Gaming section. It may or may not help you I cant know ahead of time. In the Port Range Forwarding section you can enter the application name "aceshigh.exe" and set the start port to 2000 and the end port to 6000 with the protocol set to "both." It is important that the "To IP Address" is set to your gaming computer.

I used to get that message "Lost TCP switching to UDP" from time to time followed by a disconnect. Now I can usually stay connected long enough to finish my sortie and log off for a reboot. If its your internet service that disconnected though it wont matter.

This is just for information because Symantec is your real problem.

Just happened again.   This may or may not be a coincidence, but the dumps seem to happen more often when I am near a cv(puffy ack), or there is 175-ish/250 in one of the arenas, meaning that there has been a CAP check recently.

After this most recent dump, I got right back in without a Symantec firewall message, and one arena was 175/250.

Chalenge, you are talking way above my head.   :salute

That tells me you have your router setup the same as a default. That means you are wide open. I suggest you read a little something about how to lock down your router.

I'd like to request from the the AH staff that instead of the "Lost TCP switching to UDP" error
message ..... change the message to a silver " Disco Ball " image .... it happens to me so often
that at least there would be some entertainment value.

I'm headed out to the local Goodwill store to see if I can dig up some old seventies leisure suits .....

Roger that.

I am thinking you're on to something because it happened again.  This time, turning off the Symantec did not work.  The 'version' message kept happening.  When I tried to come to the bbs to post this, it wasn't being found by by Firefox.  So, the only common denominator I can think of is my router.  Or, my machine.

Some details of the timing.  I landed, clicked on "End Sortie" and nothing happened.  I still saw local green guys and heard them.  I clicked again.  Still nothing.  Then I opened the dialogue box, typed '.ef' then 'Return.'  Box closed.  Still sitting on runway.  Heard one more green guy speak, then "TDP/UPD" and to Desktop.  There was more than a few seconds of delay, at least on my end.

I dont think that there is necessarily anything wrong with your hardware outside of some small improvements that could be made to your settings. Skuzzy gave you really good advice but whether you can or will do anything about it is up to you.
