Boelcke had a thumb. Our AH pilots apparently don't.
Make the clipboard block out all the sun effects and it would eliminate my major objection. It wouldn't be "gamey" either because you wouldn't dare do it in combat, and if you did you'd get murdered for blocking out half your view of the sky.
