Hmmm.  B29s escorted by P51Ds and P47Ns.

Gotta believe the Japanese side might be hard to fill :)

No it wont. Just set the numbers uneven like normal and all will be fine.

That sounds like a subtle whine :)

Not to worry.  The plan at this point is to set things up always in favor of the Allies.  With the numbers in their favor and the terrible Axis plane modeling, it's sure to please folks like yourself :aok :noid

I've actually got an idea using the B-29s and the nukes for a scenario. Something along the lines of BoG now where the story is woven and your actions dictate the outcome.

The push is on taking and capturing the fields on islands to island hop to Japan, while maintaining B-29 bombing runs on the cities of Japan. If the US forces take the fields they need, if they push so far ahead they have no opposition, the end result is the bomb gets dropped and the war is over.

If the Japanese forces sink the invasion fleet supporting the island hopping campaign, or if they shoot down enough B-29s over Japan, the loss will cost the allies dearly, as the final frames near/over Japan will have more defenders. The pressure on Japan's war machine would not have been enough to break resolve, and they push back. Also, perhaps designate a ship/fleet that the nuke is being shipped onboard. If it gets sunk, that nuke is lost and it sets the next frame's spawn point further back.

You could do a whole lot with this, assuming that tokyo map still works.

That would be part of the scenario (as mentioned, hunting the shipments and sinking them).

Has potential, right? Too bad the Japanese planeset is rather limited. Better than nothing, with the Ki84 and the N1K2, but still lacking  major late-war players like the late-model Ki-44s and A6M5c.

Why not keep it simple.  12 B-29 formations with 12 P-51 escorts against 250 Japanese planes.

150 for Zekes
50 for N1k's
50 for Ki's

5 to 1 odds favoring the Japanese.

Because historically there were well over 1000 B-29s hitting Japan, and they often didn't have escorts OR defensive guns. They also didn't run full throttle as they no doubt will in AH.

The no guns were night raids Krusty.

The often didn't have escorts might be a stretch too.  The early smaller number raids went without escort, but they were escorted from April 45 til the end.  No 1000 plane raids either.  Best I can find is 500 plus after the escorts  were there.  250 was considered a major effort.

If you are going to run a serious 29 campaign, it would be the last 4 months of the war in daylight with escort, as the night raids would be a bit tough to pull off.

1000+ planes in the theater, didn't mean all in 1 raid. They made about 1500 during the war (and another 1000 post war) give or take. All of them were sent to the PTO. Some were made into transports, but the majority bombed targets.

As for "no escorts" -- well you have to consider the average experience of the pilots. I've read a number of accounts where B-29s were attacked by IJA fighters unopposed, relying on their speed and defensive power to protect them. They weren't impervious, and quite a number were shot down by home defense units over Japan. Maybe the US escorts turned back, maybe they couldn't make it, or maybe they all scrambled for the only kill they'd seen in months and dogpiled the first guy they saw, falling out of position. The end result is the bomber stream was fending for itself many times.

EDIT: I wouldn't put any night missions in any scenario. Ever. AH just isn't qualified to handle it. It's a totally different game more suited to Silent Hunter fans than AH fans.

Concurrent with the B-29 release, give the Japanese the J2M, Ki45 with upward-firing cannon, or Ki.44 and I think it might be easier to get people to fly one for the Emperor.
