Each meteor (or "pinger") ionizes the ionisphere at extremely high altitudes at the path at which it burns up. Ham radio operators use this temporary ionization to make very fast voice, digital modes, and morse code contacts at 28-29.7, 50, and 144 MHz at distances much further than having no other form of propagation. Ya gotta work FAST though---you may only have 20 to 40 seconds depending on the frequency.
Thank you meteor showers!
