Had my first 2 today - running i7, crossfired 5770's, 10gb ram, win 7 64 bit, screen locked up, got ah has stopped working snergly, had to physically reboot machine to get it to respond (might have been core dumping/fault log creating or something and I'm impatient)

I had a couple of these "crash to desktop" errors in the LWA at the beginning of the month (sep), but as I don't usually fly in late war much, I didn't follow it up, and haven't been back in there since.

I have been flying in the WW1 arena 1 (ww1waf map) all month (35+ hours) without a problem until yesterday. I flew a lot yesterday and had three randomly spaced "crash to desktop" throughout the day. Different location on the map each time, the only thing in common being I was airborne and in combat at the time.

By "crash to desktop", I mean AH would disappear, I'd be back at the desktop and the Windows Error reporting would kick in, do it's stuff, and leave me with the message.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

aceshigh.exe has stopped working.

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will
close the program and notify you if a solution is available

............................. ....................Close Program

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Having clicked the close program prompt, all would appeared normal, but I'd reboot the pc each time anyway and would then continued to play AH for the next hour or so until the next random crash.

Today I've played about with this some more.

I've checked Windows 7 Home is up to date and I have the latest Nvidia driver still.

The crashes for me on the WW1 are very random (thankfully) so hard to reproduce, but I've found a position on one of the WWII maps that I can grantee to crash AH every time.

tagma map -> Offline Practice -> Field A1 -> Start Flight NE -> go external view (F4) -> DM Pan mode (F8) -> spin the view around with number pad left or right (4 or 6) -> Crashes to Desktop every time.

I don't know if this helps you any?

Unplayable as in frame rate dips into single digits every 5 to 10 seconds causing lock ups and stutters. Normal frame rate at 40 in MA Orange arena. I'm running windows XP not 7 and the problem started immediately after the patch. Prior to the patch everything was fine.

When the computer is doing nothing, bring up the Windows Task Manager and select the "Processes" tab, and note the CPU usage.  Also note the number of processes running.

I played around/tested some more today, just to see which maps I get these CTDs on, and if any of the graphics setting make a difference. For what its worth hear are the results I got.

I usually run AH with these settings, and this is what I was using when I had the three CTDs in the WW1 arena online on Saturday.

As it looks like something is getting overloaded to cause the CTDs, I upped the setting as high as I could, except for "Shadow Texture Size" which I had one setting down (a "Shadow Texture Size" of "8192" reduces my fps to only 1 or 2 fps which isn't much good for testing)

I then tested each of the terrains I have, (many of which probably aren't even used anymore).

Each test consisted of randomly picking a: Small field, Medium filed, Large field, Vehicular base, Port, and CV.

At each location I would try

Looking around 360 deg in the Tower.
Panning around 360 deg external to the Tower.

and at airfields, go to the runway with 3 Mosquito Mk XVI (to test the new cockpits) and try

Looking around 360 deg in the Cockpit.
Panning around 360 deg external to the Cockpit.

If I got a CDT, I would reboot and try again to see if it was repeatable, then move on the next map.

Maps on which I couldn't generate a CDT:

ahta08, aleutian, arden08s, baltic, beta2, bob09, compello, coralsea, dueling, greece, koth_06, midway1, mmesa, montis, okinawa, ozkansas, rangoon, sfma, slot2, smpizza, trinity, tunisia, twinrivr, ww1waf

Maps on which I got a CDT but couldn't repeat it (exiting planes, switching fields, etc):

italy1, northsea, sfterr2

Maps on which I got a CDT every time I tried (along with the base I was at):

afrumble (A4), avasml (A7), bob04 (A28), Japan1 (A1), mindnao (A10), ndisles (A15), rhinesum (A4), rhinewin (A4), tagma (A1)

Next I played around with the graphics setting to see if lowering any of these would prevent the repeatable CTDs I was getting. Lowering the "Ground Detail Range" helps a lot, and back at the default amount I'm not able to repeat any of the CTDs I was getting.

Hope this helps.

Reading between the lines, it appears as though Windows 7 64 at times needs to "reset" the video card, on certain peoples systems.  Has anyone with the issue tried disabling the Aero interface on their Win 7 system?  It's perhaps a long shot, but I haven't had the kernel crash mentioned, and have done so on mine.

Just grasping at straws...

Will do that next time I find time to fly Ghastly, will report back once done.

Bear in mind, only recently had a ctd, so might be something specific with my system, but worth a try.

In the control panel is your GTX480 set to manage color or is the default windows and programs set to manage color? Try setting it to the video card.

Flew in the AvA arena with aero turned off - no disco. That said, only had the 2 I previously refered to, so may not be germane.

Just to update this:

Reading between the lines, it appears as though Windows 7 64 at times needs to "reset" the video card, on certain peoples systems.  Has anyone with the issue tried disabling the Aero interface on their Win 7 system?  It's perhaps a long shot, but I haven't had the kernel crash mentioned, and have done so on mine.

Just grasping at straws...

<S>

Thanks for the suggestion Ghastly, I've disabled the Aero interface but still the same CTDs.

In the control panel is your GTX480 set to manage color or is the default windows and programs set to manage color? Try setting it to the video card.

Thanks for the suggestion bustr, I've tried with the default windows managed colour and with NVidia’s control panel managed colour, but still the same CTDs.

I've updated the motherboard BIOS to the latest available: RampageIII-Extreme-ASUS-1005 BIOS (09/10/2010) - but still the same CTDs.

I've done a clean install of the latest available graphics driver: nVidia 260.89_desktop_win7_winvista_ 64bit_english_whql (10/18/2010) - but still the same CTDs.

I've updated Windows 7 64-bit with all the currently available updates (10/19/2010) - but still the same CTDs.

I've uninstalled AH and re-installed with a fresh download of AH2214.EXE (10/18/2010) and AHHIRES2210.EXE (09/15/2010)

This is a clean install to it’s default directory and I haven't copied across any previous settings, sounds, custom sights, old terrains, skins, etc.

The only settings I've adjusted are the "Video Settings" and "Options-Graphic Detail", which are set as before for testing:

The only terrain installed is the default "ndisles"

As before, just looking around in the tower or going external and looking around at fields A15 or A16 causes a CTD every time.

and lowering the "Ground Detail Range" to it's default position cures the problem:

Sid,

Have you looked into the voltage settings on your RAM?  If it's set to default in the BIOS, it may be too low.

That was the cause of my issue with same same "Exception Code: c0000005" error.

Thanks katanaso

The ASUS Rampage III Extreme motherboard has got more voltage settings in the BIOS than I have ever seen before (all set to AUTO).

Relating to RAM specifically, I've got

QPI/DRAM Core Voltage [Auto]
DRAM Bus Voltage [Auto]
DRAM DATA REF Voltage on CH A/B/C [Auto]
DRAM CTRL REF Voltage on CH A/B/C [Auto]

The "DRAM Bus Voltage" looked a little low at 1.601v, I've slowly upped this to 1.654v which is as close to the ref 1.65v that I can get.

I'm not an expert over clocker, so that’s as high as I'm going for now.

Still the same CTDs.

I've also installed the latest graphics driver: nVidia 260.99_desktop_win7_winvista_ 64bit_international_whql (10/25/2010)

Still the same CTDs.

What make and model RAM are you using?  I'll do some searches on settings in my spare time today if you can post that info.
