Host Connection Lost
« on: August 22, 2010, 10:25:41 PM »
I keep getting this error every time I try to join an online server after it completely loads. No clue why.

A few possibilities.

1) Timeout due to taking too long to connect to the arena.
If the computer is loading very slowly (over 20 seconds) before it can get to the tower, then the game will disconnect.

2) Firewall blocking the connection.
A firewall blokcing the game from connecting to the arenas.  Can also be anti-virus causing it.

3) Internet issue.
Try running Ping Plotter to 206.16.60.38 and see if it can reach the destination.

4) General resource issues.
The computer lacks the resources to run the game with the settings that have been chosen, without causing timeouts and discos.

A DXDIAG would be helpful for some of it.

You cannot say, "no problems on their end".  If Ping Plotter shows no packet loss, when run for an extended period of time (> 2 minutes) and immediately after a disco occurs, your data is not valid.

If your data meets the above requirements, and there is still no packet loss, then it is unlikely an Internet related disco.  If you are connecting via wireless, all bets are off due to bit errors occurring, which cannot be stopped.  It is the nature of the beast.

If you got here and nothing has clicked, then we need to look at what is running on your computer which could have an impact on the game.  Anti-anything can cause problems with game connections.  iPod/iTunes also will cause connection problems.  Your ISP doing high refresh amounts on your IP address can cause connection issues.  That is a few things.

If I still have not hit anything that fits, then we need to get into potential resource issues with the computer itself, possibly driver issues too.

The nature of a disco is the local client (the game on your computer) has lost contact with the server, for whatever reason, so it shuts down.  The server never stops talking to your computer.  If it did, everyone in the arena would lose connection at the same exact time.  Much like it does when we change terrains.

Ah thanks. That was informative. I don't think it's a resource problem. 2.8dualcore, 9800gts, 4 gigs ram, all several years old but still working well. I disconnected my router, now go straight to my comp. Still occasional disco's. I'll watch ping plotter again. My average ms spike once in a while but hasn't shown any packet loss. The spike is on the first jump tho. So could be my modem? I've noticed the last few times it's acted up is when I get home after a thunderstorm and it discos me until I reboot. Then it works mostly. I can use web browser, stream, play other online games, just not AH2, until I reboot. Anyway, thanks for the advice. I'll recheck some things.

The things you listed you do could be the culprit.  If rebooting clears it up, then there is a good chance something is being left in an unknown or incorrect state causing problems for the game.  Not unusual, especially for anything that is Java based, like many of the WEB based games.
