How to change monitor refresh rate in AH ?
« on: July 03, 2001, 10:40:00 PM »
I have found that AH on my system works in 1024x768 60 Hz mode   While monitor can do 100 Hz. What do I need to change refresh rate for Direct 3D ? Some additional software ? Newer drivers ?

I use TNT2 Ultra with NVIDIA's Detonator 2.08 Reference Drivers and big good monitor.

Dont really want change drivers... Newer are for new cards and these work fine for me except that refresh thing.

Click Start then Settings, Control Panel, Display, then settings again, then advanced in the lower right corner, then adapter, there you can change monitor refresh rates, just make sure you don't exceed what your monitor can handle! Good Luck!

Shortcut is right-click your desktop and select "Properties" from menu.
In 98,SE and ME you might need to specify what monitor(manufacturer and type) you're using before setting ref.rate(some monitors have small executable file in floppy-disk which do this for you, check from monitors manufacturer's site), In W2k you can select refresh-rate from menu though it wants you to test it first.

If you need a tool to take care almost all things concerning your monitor or vid-card "PowerStrip" is propably best proggie for this. http://www.entechtaiwan.com/ps.htm

And yes, It could be good idea to check from manual or monitor's manufacturer's site what refresh-rates your monitor is capable to use in different resolutions (Usually when using bigger resolutions like 1600*1200 you need to use lower refresh-rate).
If you set rate too high to monitor to handle it propably wont broke monitor but you need to reboot windows to the "safe-mode" which uses resolution 640*480 with 16 colors (If I remember correct pressing F8 when computer starts to load windows gives you menu where you can select safe-mode). Then go to the properties again and set lower rate.

Thanks its working at 90hz now   :) I had to download Powerstrip and delete existing 1024x768 resolutions specs from my registry, then add new one with better freq.

btw if Windows won't let you change refresh-rates you haven't specify yet what kind of monitor you're using.
I had to tell my pc that monitor I was using was different type it actually is and after that I could select ref.rates 60-100hz and resolutions from 640*480 to 1600*1200hz thought monitor can only handle 1024*768@75hz...

Display properties-> settings-> advanced-> monitor-> "change"

(Translated from Finnish straight from my memory, Got NT4 here in work which is,surprise, different to configure)

No I did specify monitor type to use high refresh rate on desktop. But in 3D it was using some different number. May be because I was playing with LCD a day ago may be not. I tried set refresh for AH resolution in display properties but it did not work until I get Powerstrip to change resistry records.

IME Windows defaults to something it considers safe.

This does not equate to being good.

Sounds like you got it worked out, but here's some information in case you guys ever run across it.

There is a well known bug with the newer detonator drivers and Win2k and XP that makes 75 Hz (or 60Hz on some MX cards) the maximum Direct 3d refresh rate in a game.  There is currently no official fix, and the only way around it involves editing the registry and removing the 60Hz setting and then adding the desired refresh rate.  One problem with this fix is that TV output will no longer work, as 60Hz is required for this.
