Problems running/playing AH
« on: October 17, 1999, 02:43:00 PM »
I posted this in another forum, but no one answered, I'm hoping maybe someone will here :-) I'm basically having 2 problems... One is halting me from being able to play this

#1. VERY minor problem. Seems whenever I get online, it uses the name Test1. How do I change that?

#2. the MAJOR problem. AH seems to recognize I have a joystick. It's a Madcatz Panther XL running from a Diamond Monster MX300 game port. I normally have no problems with this setup except here in AH, the joystick movement doesn't register at all. The Trackball functions as a rudder properly, the throttle properly recognizes and increases and decreases power, and ALL of the buttons work. It's just the stick itself doesn't do ANYTHING. hehe In fact, at 1st I thought it was just my poor attempts at taking off, but I've already (just using rudder, flaps, and throttle controls) taken off. You know at the end of the runway there's that dropoff? Well I got the plane fly perfectly straight off that dropoff. But even in mid air, I could raise gear, raise flaps, change engine speeds, etc, all using joystick buttons, but I couldn't control the plane!

I'm sorry for being so long winded, but I just wanna give as much info as possible in case anyone has ideas :-)

Specs.
P2-450. 128M Ram. TNT2 and V2 vid cards (tried both, no change). Madcatz Panther XL (tried both Panther XL and Panther XL + DOS drivers), MX300 sound card (tried both Monster sound gameport driver and standard
gameport drivers, including poll with inturrupts). Still no help. Also have tried both DX6.1 and 7.

Any ideas would be great. even if there was a way to keyboard it :-)
Thanks!

A couple of obvious questions first

Have you calibrated the joystick in the Windows Control Panel?

Has it been calibrated in AH?

Try unchecking "Poll with Interrupts Enabled' and see if that works.

Best of luck.

Thanx Jekyll!! :-)

Yeah, it's calibrated fine in Win98. works with all my other games no problem :-)

As far as Calibrating in AH. I tried that before, didn't seem to work.

Yeah, I tried the poll inturrupts on AND off, no change

I'm wondering if I can scrounge up a 2 button  stick just to try it. heheheh

Hiya Hitech!

Yea, it's #1 controller under the advanced section. In fact I've even uninstalled, and reinstalled the joystick driver with a different version and it still didn't fix it

Just for grins, try deleting the Joystick.cfg file and restarting the game. Fixed a weird problem for me.

Hi again :-) I'm becoming a real pain, eh?
hehehe

Mark: I just uninstalled and reinstalled AH to check something, and as I thought, I have no joystick.cfg.
When I try to calibrate and such, I get a stick.cfg in a newly created settings folder, but I never get a Joystick.cfg file. I tried deleteing the stick.cfg file but it didn't alter anything. Maybe it's just my Joystick and AH?

StarKnite Look under advanced in the control panel Joystick and all, ake sure you have a standard gameport selected. This was one of my problem. If not before you change it go and delete the stick.cfg file in AH. Then come back delete the joystick that you use from the selection window and then go and turn on the standard game port. After that reselect the joystick and calibrate it under windows. I did this when I decided to run the CH products beta driver for Win98. AH would not reconize the same stick with the new driver unless done like above. Spike went way down wth this new driver also.

Thanks for the response. I just tried it as you said. Or at least, I think I did. This is what I tried..

Deleted stick.cfg. Removed my Panther XL from the control panel. Switch to "Standard Gameport." Reinstalled PantherXL. It IS set as #1 controller. Poll with inturrupts is off. calibrated PantherXL in Win98. then loaded Aces High. Attempted to fly. No luck. Tried to calibrate within Aces High, attempted to fly again. Still exact same problem.

Did I miss something?
Thanks for all the help you guys are givin me. Maybe sometime I can hit the sky throw hot lead your way ;-)

Looks like you covered everything. Dont know much about the Panther who makes it. That might help me find an answer for you. Just went and found the MadCatz Panther XL and on their web site it said something about disabling the mouse function try this and see if ti works.

Here is the Web site.

Unfortunately indian, I don't have the mouse emulation enabled on my trackball

Does anyone else out there have a madcatz PantherXL that IS working?? I think I'll check Madcatz's panther page and ask people on thier message board.

ok not sure details on that particular stick is... if you have like the old MS sidewinders have, you might have a switch to convert from analog to digital or vise versa. try using it both ways but, if its analog only try using the TM or CH stick config in windows joy stick control panel. you might lose some buttons to use but might get you rollin'. also have you checked it with other games/sims since the problem on set? from the MS series sticks AH varies greatly in stick handling. I have a throtle  spike, but Im lucky as many have more and worse spikes, or is plain unusable.

Hiya Aircat!!!

Well as far as the stick, I'm pretty sure it's digital. In fact, they say I can't use a Y-Splitter with it because the Y Splitter is analog and this needs a pure digital input (which might be the problem in itself.) Unfortunately, currently as far as I know of, there is no switch to go between digital and analog. ONLY digital. Only switch this stick has is one to make the trackball light up. (WHOOT! lol) It still performs perfect with my other games (flight/Space sims it rules for. I still use my custom Keyboard/trackball for FPS tho.) Also to, an unfortunate problem I have is that I can't even get it to function as a generic 2 Axis/2 button, because when I set it to that, Win98 (and win95 when I was using that) wouldn't recognize there was a joystick attached unless I specifically used PantherXL drivers.

Good news? My throttle and rudder (trackball) are dead on accurate in AH. hehehe
