G35 headset
« on: August 27, 2010, 04:29:32 AM »
Hello there...

I have an issue with my G35 headset and Aces high...every time I talk on vox, when I release the transmit button I get a big stutter that stops the game for a fraction of second. Likewise when the game play sounds it hasn't played before in the session the game stutters...I don't have the problem with the integrated sound card of my motherboard. I know USB is bad, that it adds work to the CPU, but with a Phenom II X4 965 that shouldn't be an issue. Any idea ?

You have 3 sounds card devices in your computer.  Each one of them will be called to play or record a sound and it is up to each one to determine if it is that device that is supposed to handle the request.

More than likely, the USB port you are connecting through is also sharing an IRQ with some other high demand data device.

It does not matter how many cores your computer has.  At IRQ time, all of them are dead (except the one running the IRQ routine) and have to wait until the IRQ is satisfied.  You need to remember, only one core/CPU can access anything outside of the CPU (memory, system, and I/O busses).

IRQ's cause a context switch to occur which invalidates all data in the CPU cache and none of the cores can reload the cache until the interrupt is completed (reti).

I have no mean to change IRQ and the headset isn't using one. When I disable the onboard sound card I don't get the issue anymore, I will try a different driver for it.

The headset is using an IRQ.  If it connects to the USB port, it is using the USB port IRQ.  Chances are, and this is just a guess based on what you have said, the particular USB port you are using is sharing the same IRQ as the sound card.  Nothing good ever came from that.

Move the USB headset to another USB port and hope you hit the other USB hub in the computer as it will use a different IRQ.

Somehow I fixed it by restoring an older version of the integrated sound card, changing the USB port, and disabling most of the inputs/outputs in windows. Changing the USB port didn't fix much, I think the integrated soundMAX was conficting somehow with the headset. The test that set me on the right track was to disable the integrated sound card in the BIOS then the game became smooth. Then I reactivated it and installed the oldest driver I could find. Maybe the ressource allocation changed with the reactivation I don't know.

BTW besides the problems I had with it this headseat is great. The localisation of the sounds is pretty impressive, I can hear the cons I don't see and it saved my virtual life many times :) Adds a lot of immersion into the game.

I think their there is a little cosmetic bug on certain guns, the external sound is the 37mm sound while the guns are Hispano 20mm for example.

You should not have any other sound cards either internal or add on with this this device.  The G-35 is a USB device with it's own sound solution built in.  Well that is what I gathered from looking at it's stats.

All the Best...
