P47 M Info?
« on: September 11, 2010, 10:05:30 AM »
Does anyone have the performance stats on the P47 M?  I'm planning on learning the Jug next month and I'd like to know how it stacks against other models.  There's nothing on the Wiki or the Aircraft Evaluation pages. Also, any advice on how to fly this particular model would be helpful.

Thanks again

-Muzzy

Muzzy,

The M is a high alt speed machine.  Able to do over 470 w/Wep at 30k feet.  It also does have small dive brakes, to help it slow down in a dive.  You pretty much fly it like any other 47, by always keeping a good amount of air under you so you can always dive to escape.  I prefer to fly it as a B&Z maching but can turn ok, but not it's strong point.  It's main assets are its high top speed, diving ability, durability, and hitting power.  Main weaknesses being the same as most heavy american fighters, in not a great accelerator or climber.  I normally use it as an escort fighter, but sometimes use it as a B&z machine if I know I'm going to be coming in on a low fight. Also a good bomber interceptor, if you have it at height already. It's a fun plane, and probably one of the top 4 that I use.  The key to it as I mentioned earlier is always leave yourself enough alt. to work with, becouse almost nothing can catch you in a dive (a tempest got me once :lol), so it's very survivable in that reguard.

A month is now where near enough time to learn this plane. But the best way to actually learn it is to get in there and knife fight. Yes you will get killed alot, but you'll get a feel for it quicker. Sure you can stay high and fly around but it'll take forever to get proficient in it that way. Start off with a light fuel load, keep your head on a swivel. Practice your deflection shots, scissors and barrel rolls. Use high and low yo-yos to counter better turning planes and a wingman to help get ya out of a jam.  :salute

Well I don't expect to be an expert in it in only a month, but I would like to have an idea of what the plane can do before I start using it.  Usually I read the write-ups and do a few plane comparisons, then I fly the bird around the TA to get a feel for it.  Of course after that I take it into combat, having learned a little of what to do before I actually get into combat.

Before I used to just jump in and fly, and I would make a ton of mistakes and blame the aircraft rather than my own ignorance.  I had very bad experiences in Spits and Mustangs because of this. Now I prefer to do my homework before trying to take a ride into combat.

Well the plane was meant for exactly what Bigrat discribed but that would be quite boring to stay that high all the time IMO. If you do choose to fly it that way, I'd avoid the diving away as much as possible. It's bread and butter is up high. So dive only long enough to build speed to climb higher (25 to 30k). Keep a close eye on you speed as it's a whole different dogfight at those alts. Set yourself a 15k hard deck and use DTs to cruise around and hunt. Drop them to get light quickly when the fight begins. And my rule of thumb is to have my nose pointed at the con anytime he's within 3K of me and maintain no less then 300 IAS until i'm behind the target. Also, with 8 .50s I'll bring my convergence out to 450 or so.

Personally i like the 25 because of the skins, but i'd take the 11 for dogfights and the N for jabo stuff.

Fun film, correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't see those bombers shooting back much. :)

Question: What are your other favorite planes? :)

F4u-1a: my bread and butter, and primary mix it up machine.  If I'm up in this, then I'm serious.

A-20: Primary mud mover and heavy fighter in a pinch.

P47M: Escort fighter/ bomber hunter

109G2: Interceptor (when the F4U or 47 just won't get high enough quick enough) Gondies for bombers/clean for fighters.

"109K4" would love to add this to the list.  I can fly it fairly well, just not great with the Tater :lol

So there's my top 4
