Tooling up for AH
« on: May 05, 2000, 10:36:00 AM »
I'm a WB regular who's decided to see for himself what AH is all about. Are there any H&S tips that I should be aware of? Any CH j-stick setups available? Thanks in advance. My rig is:
  • Pentium III 733 (o/c to 825 on 150 FSB)
  • ABIT VA6 mobo (256 Mb DRAM)
  • Leadtek GeForce DDR video
  • CH F-16 Fighterstick & Pro Throttle
  • TM Elite pedals
  • PDPI L4 game card
  • 3Com external (USB) ISDN terminal adapter

Sorry, your system isn't powerful enough to run AH.

There are a couple joystick config files on the downloads page.  (You can also map/remap anything you want to any joystick button under setup > joystick mapping.)

The downloads page also has the custom sound files and gunsights you might want to try.

After just reading your system specs , I decided to just hate you right from the start . hehe joke man .

Sounds like a nice set up .

Just read back posts on the help forum . Helped me lots .  This game grows on ya , really didn't know if I liked it or not at first .

The trim and compression or whatever you call it in a dive is the worst for me  . When I stoped diving so fast and got more used to the triming it got a little better .

Dive left rudder trim and left ail. trim .If you let off throttle because you are going to fast in a dive and your stick is stuffed into the left front corner , it just makes it worse as the plane then rolls more to the right . Try it in level flight trim , then just get off the throttle , over to the right you roll , do it in a dive at 450 mph and you are a loving lawn dart . lol . But I found this trick don't get off the throttle use the - key on the number pad . If you try this you will find that you roll to the left   .

Thanks, I'll try those j-stick files from the d/l section, right after I finish upgrading this puny little machine.

Bino:
Just a note.I found it took some 6-8 weeks before I felt "at home" going from WB>AH.Might just be me as a slow learner though: but chances are FM still feel akward after the 2 free weeks.

But then again, with that system you can just enjoy the view  ;=)

Bino,

Sorry!! That system won't cut it here in AH!!

The best thing to do is to e-mail me and I will take it off your hands for a small fee.  I don't do this for just anybody, just my buddies!

I have the same - F16 Fighterstick and Pro-throttle and you should find that your WB's Speedkeys file should work very well here with only a few minor changes. Just print out the "AH" KEY command list and change whatever key presses  you might want to keep the same function on your thottle or stick as you had in WB's.
I recomend you assign now, or leave room for, ajusting  prop rpm (coming some day), a 4-way hat to use the "zoom" feature for when you want to get closer for the kill and I also use one of the 4 way hats on the throttle to move up, down, left, and right in the cockpit to take advantage of the exellent view system. For example,  to move a bit around the cockpit frame  and keep a bogy in sight.
I can email my Speedkeys if you like and you can try it out. The 8 way hat I use in conjunction with the throttle hat to at all compass points available; look up + (stick hat switch) and down + (hat switch), back up, forward up, etc.

(PS  Ripsnort, I just remembered I am past due on an email!  It's coming asap!)

BINO- GREAT system. May I suggest you look
into the MoBo ASUS P3-E with the DR2
DIMM RISER. It will work well with your CPU.
PLUS the CORSAIR 128 MB PC133 SDRAM CAS2

GOOD luck on your purchase.

Bino, I'd be happy to optimize your system for AH.  Just send it to me with return postage.

(Due to the extensive testing required, please expect 6-8 weeks for optimization.)

Westy - where did you find a 4-way hat on a Fighterstick?   Mine's got 2 8-way hats

Actually, I forgot about it - thanks for reminding guys! - need to extract it from it's box and use it in AH since there's no FF anyway for my beloved ForceFX *sniff*.

Westy, NP, I solved my CH stick spike problem.

Bino: Welcome, as Danish pointed out, any new flight sim takes awhile to accustom too, but knowing you, you'll be knocking them down soon enough.  <S>

Thanks also for the welcome, and for the stick setup suggestions.

Lynx, My stick has only one 8 way. I have do have access to a method to make any CH 4 way POV hat an 8 -way
 http://www.zeb.clara.net/jstick.html

This DOES work!  If you're not squeemish with a dremel tool. IT works on any 4 way CH hat that I've come across. FX, Combat Flight sticks etc.
FYI, when I mentioned the 4-way in the baove post I meant the 4 way toggles/hats on the Pro throttle. My 'bad.'

Ripsnort. Sorry I had not gotten back to you   but I'm glad your stick is ok. What was the fix btw ??

hehe Westy - I did it to my stick 3 years ago, posted the instructions on AGW/newserver and sent dozens of e-mails to people . Dremmel? Who needs this junk? Use a sharp knife - same results.

I converted the lower hat on a Fighterstick into an 8-way thing (there's a side effect though - with my views setup looking back-left-up fires cannons too )

Tried the same for ForceFX - didn't work. Never tried the top hat though - found it unusable on CH sticks for views - too far up . I'll try again with a ForceFX... Doubt it though. BTW - the only difference between 4 and 8-way hats is that the latter allows depressing 2 switches at once. And the joystick circuitry, of course .
