LCD LED tv for computer monitor?
« on: September 04, 2010, 09:25:03 PM »
My video card (seems like it is an 8800gt or gt8800  ) has what looks like dvi output jack.  Can I buy like a 32" hdtv and use it for monitor?  If so, what should I get, as to resolution and stuff.  Was thinking of getting a Samsung tv of some sort, 120hz refresh rate, or something in this area.  Have a 20" monitor right now and was thinking maybe I could get a big enough one to have tv in my office and also a big monitor for the pc.

Any ideas?

Yes!  A lot of people do this!

I personally don't have experience doing it, but it's becoming quite common.

As for resolution, of course higher numbers are bigger... you'll find 1920X1080 to probably be the most common... at least with anything bigger than say 25".

You might also want to make sure the model you want to purchase has a "PC Mode" or "One-to-One Pixel" mode...

One problem with using a TV as a monitor is the TV will sometimes add a slight amount of latency between the video card and the screen (to process the image) and this can cause some issues with gaming.  Some people notice it and some don't.  Some TV's are better than others.. just make sure you do your research.

My son uses a 38 inch Samsung and has no trouble. He uses the picture in picture to watch TV while he's playing games. He has the big 3 game systems as well and has no trouble playing both single games as well as on-line games..... sometimes I really hate him  :neener:

Also check responce time you want one less than 5 2 is better.. Some companies can cheat on this number.
I have a 32in. and wouldn't trade it for anything but one bigger. You can watch your DVDs  as well as TV.
I have the same card and it works fine, but when I up grade I will get one that has HDMI for this 32in is old and only has DVI.
