1776, this is actually normal with electric equipment in general: either they fail very quickly or they last ages. This is why lightbulbs almost always fail when switched on or off, never while on. Send it back under warranty and get a replacement. Should that fail...

Went to their community BBS and found the solution :)  It's a shame they don't provide the info that was needed to fix my problem in their trouble shooting part of the booklet.  Many others have had the same problem.

Will try IBM next time.

Salute!

My 4gb WD is still ticking after 4 yrs of it falling off the spindle while spinning up.  I even called WD support and let the guy listen to it :P and he said welp it could last 1 day or 10 yrs ya never know.  Since then I have switched to IBM.  I have 2 of em in this system the oldest is 2 yrs old and both are running smooth so far.
I just think with HDDs you can either get a good one or a bad one. doesn't seem to be much in between.  No matter the brand name.

I still have a Quantum 40 MEG drive that works fine.  Yes, 40 MEG, not Gig.

Hence, I have always bought Quantum drives.  I have not lost one.  There was one model years ago around the 850 Meg size (if I remember right) that had a high error rate, but other than that I've always found Quantum drives to be high quality.  I worked hardware support, and then network support for many years.... so I have a reasonable amount of experience to base my opinion on.  I still buy Quantum.  They are not always the fastest, but they have always proven to be good quality reliable drives for me.
