Fresnel lens?
« on: May 17, 2000, 05:52:00 PM »

I have a 21" monitor.  I have heard in the past of people using a Fresnel lens in front of their monitor to give increased sense of depth.  I was wanting to know if anyone else has had experience with this and if it is worth the trouble and cost.

If so, does anyone have any good sources out there for the lens and /or discussions of the setup.  If I'm going to do it I want a high quality lens.

Thanks for any info.

Regards,

Hi AKWabbit,
I dont use one but have also considered it. The guy you want to talk to is Hobo. He has been using one for years and absolutely swears by them He will have info about where to get a quality lens and could answer any other questions you might have, with a heavy dose of advocacy to go with it no doubt. He is actively flying AH and reads this board so he may respond, but you might try e-mailing him. He has posted extensively on AGW H&S Forum about them. They are not that expensive for a good one($50?) although mounting them can be a pain from what I understand, depending on your setup.

Check out this link AKWabbit,
Here a guy built a cockpit and used the LENS.
He does have one or two complaints, like dust and that it will cause queasyness.
But I too am thinking of if not building a cockpit, at least building a chair with places for throt/stick in arms....actually was thinking an old barber's chair with the rudder tacked onto the foot rest would be perfect.
Anyway heres the link and in that link is a place to get a Fresnel lens.
Hope it helps!

I had one for awhile but it got scratched when I moved. I bought it 4 years ago and dont remember where, sry. It was pertty cool, works best if you dont let any light in between the lens and the monitor(you can use a cardboard box to do this) paint the inside walls flat black so not to reflect light from your monitor.

Hey Milnko!
Im looking to do the same thing. I was thinking more along the lines of a Captins chair from a Van or RV, which may be more easily had at your local junkyard.
