Lightweight, rugged laptop recommendations?
« on: September 07, 2010, 06:03:07 AM »
Starting a new job and have been told I get to pick a laptop.  I need something lightweight but rugged, Windows-based.   Looking for screen sizes in 12-14" range, weight under 4 lbs if possible.   Need something that can take hard use (shock absorbing construction) and operate from -40F to 125F.
Considering a solid state drive, but not sure about the expense vs reliability -- they still seem pretty spendy for the size drive you get.

Want to keep cost under $1500, if possible.    Can anybody make a recommendation?

Thanks

I'm not sure how close you can get to within budget - or what the operating temperature ranges are for the non-military grade gear - but the Panasonic Toughbooks in the Semi-Rugged series are a good choice for a "hardened" laptop and may be as close as you can get on that budget.  I purchased the daylight readable 1024x768 CF 52 touchscreen version a couple of versions ago, and while it won't stand up to deliberate abuse it's far more rugged than an "average" laptop. And it's kind of funny to walk by a police cruiser and see "my" laptop sitting in it.

The "Rugged" series which is all you are asking and more is way outside the budget you describe.
