Is my MS Sidewinder 3D Pro spiking?
« on: December 15, 1999, 10:13:00 AM »
I have looked around the bbs' some and have not been able to find my exact problem.

Symptom:  Throttle (engine) goes to idle; joystick input is inhibited.  This is accompanied by a low-volume but still "hearable" "click/pop" sounds from my speakers.

Keyboard appears to still work because I can use flaps and 'x' for autopilot.  "Lockup" lasts anywhere from 2 to 5 seconds.  After lockup, throttle automatically goes back to the setting it was at and I have joystick input.  Happens any time, i.e. when I am already on autopilot, when I am taking off, when I am flying...no pattern.  Sometimes it happens a lot and sometimes it happens only occasionally.

Prior to .40 I believe the above was happening, except I don't remember the throttle going down.  Just the stick lockup.

I have read a lot about "stick-stir" code and joystick spiking.  I have never seen any messages about stick-stirring, even when I tried to induce them.  However, from what I read in other messages I wonder if my joystick is spiking and maybe causing stick-stir code to kick in?

I have recalibrated the stick in Control Panel and also in AH.  It works just fine except for this occasional "
lockup" (pain in the bum at low alt strafing)

I'm just wondering if anyone has heard of this and what my problem might be.  Spike stick, bug, bad connection, get new drivers(?), "get a new system", whatever...

Final questions, is the Symptom I described above what happens when stick-stir code kicks in?

Suggestions/help welcome.

system is 3 years old (except video card)
Gateway Pentium Pro 200mh
128RAM
28.8 connection
plenty of HD; AH is not on C:
MS Sidewinder 3D prec pro

I've had this happen to me a few times too.  I'm using MS Sidewinder Pre Pro also.  Most of the time I get a message about moving the controls too rapidly, usually followed by a rapid auger into the ground.   It usually happens to me with a lot of people online, don't know if this makes any difference.  Sometimes I get the weird popping noises in my speakers too, but not always along with joystick problems.  It's not a huge problem for me, it's only happened 3 or 4 times since .37, and usually it stops after a reboot.  I have a computer up at college too, and it does not have this problem.

ATI Expert 98 <--- hate this card

Sidewinder drivers version 3.01
Sound Blaster 16 card (don't remember the brand, probably Creative Labs)
64 MB ram
MS Sidewinder P Pro (USB)
SE440Bx-2 chipset

OOH OOH! I know the answer...

Awright I had this problem with my joystick, if you look back you will see my incessant whining about it. The problem seems to lie with your resolution and the MS Sidewinder device driver. In aces high when I ran my TNT card in 1024x768 this ALWAYS happenned to me. Ask SCGraybeard about that famous bounce I whistled right past him on
However, I was under the impression it was just my TNT card, When I switched to a 3dFX Voodoo2 card I was able to run 1024x768 with no more lockups. My TNT did not lockup at 800x600 either. It looks like someone is repeating my bug! Pyro, can we help you trace this down? Tell us what to try!
