how to get into the online game rooms

I joined AcesHigh about two months ago and have yet to get into any of the online game rooms. I progress to the Hangar and configure (I think) and aircraft and then go to the Tower and that is as far as I can get. My question is, how DO I get into one of the rooms? There is nothing I have found to figure this out.
I am not new to online gaming; just finished ten years on Fighter Ace. IF I can actually get into the rooms I can pretty much go from there.

When you start AH it will open up the splash intro screen with the clipboard.  Click on "Online" and it will then display the online arenas (Early War, MidWar, Late War, Training, Axis vs. Allies, Dueling, World War I, Special Events).

I do that, but then it goes no further. I click on "Start Flight" and nothing happens. I click on the airfield squares on the clipboard and am told "You cannot fly your aircraft from that airfield." Nothing further happens; I am missing something simple and obvious to people who are familiar with the peculiarities of the game, but it is not obvious to me.
Again: how do I get INTO the game rooms?

If you went "online" and joined EW, LW or any other arena, you ARE in a game room.

That you could not fly a plane could be a result  of:
- trying to fly a plane from a vehicle base
- trying to fly a plane that's not being enabled in that particular arena - those planes are marked red in the plane list.

When the game starts, you are presented with the Aces High splash screen. The splash screen shows the version of the game you are running in the upper left corner, along with the current game resolution setting.

A moment after the splash screen appears, the clipboard will move into view.

At the bottom of the clipboard you will find various options you can select with your mouse.

From your description of what's happening, I can't tell where you are going, but it's not where you are supposed to...
