Lockups after Vid upgrade
« on: January 02, 2000, 11:27:00 PM »
I just upgraded my video setup.  I was running an older Stealth 2000 card with a Monster 3D2 Voodoo2 card, and AH worked fine.  I just upgraded to a Voodoo3 3500 TV, and the game still functions well, though obviously faster, but after flying for about 10 minutes, the screen simply freezes in place.  Engine sound continues playing, but the computer is totally locked.  Neither Alt-Tab or Ctrl-Alt-Delete does anything.  I must hit reset or power down.  I am running this on a K6-2 400, 64MB RAM, Voodoo3 3500, DirectX 7.0a.  The freeze occurs regardless of what plane I am flying, or what action is happening, even if I am just cruising along in a B-17. I wondered if it might be heat related, and installed a fan on the 3500's heat sink, but the lockup still happens, after the approx. same amount of time.  It appears to be DirectX related, as I can play GL games for hours with no probs.  AH is the only one I have probs with, and is the only one I play using DirectX exclusively.  Any input would be appreciated.

I would check the heat sync and fan on your CPU to make sure nothing happened to it while installing your new card.  Do you still have the Voodoo II installed?

No, I am still using the Voodoo3.  All appears to be o.k. with the CPU and fan, and I check the heat sink on the V3 immediately after a lock up and it is quite cool with the fan I installed on it.  It is very strange, as AH is the only application that this happens with.  All other games work fine, and all other Windows apps do as well.  The problem didn't occur with the Voodoo2, but only appeared after the V3 was installed.  Between the V2 and V3 I had installed a Creative 3D Blaster TNT2, which worked great in AH, but made Windows totally freak some times, causing the current application to start jumping all over.  I never was able to get it stable in Windows.  I removed it and installed a Guillemot MaxiGamer Cougar TNT2, PCI version, and couldn't ever get it to act stable in anything... games or apps.  I finally decided to return to the Voodoo line, as I have previously had a V1 and V2 with great results. The V3 works great for everything else (some glitches in the TV software though), but I can always count on a lock up after a few minutes in AH.  Lock ups happen in both online and offline, and under different conditions.  They don't seem to be related to any particular action or graphic display on the screen.  They definiitely aren't happening due to smoke, as I haven't been able to fly long enough to get to any action before it locks up.  I also got an old copy of version 0.38 and tried it to see if it was version dependent, and the same lockup happened.  I downloaded the latest V3 driver files from 3DFX and still have the problem.  I even tried installing DirectX 5 from an old install file I still had to see if the latest ver. of DX was causing it, and the only difference was a slower frame rate, but the lockup still happened.  I'm really stumped at this point.

I removed the V3 and reinstalled the Stealth and V2, and flew for over 2 hours without a hitch.  The problem is definitely with the V3 itself.  Due to this, and the problems with the TV software that came with it, I am going to attempt to return the 3500, get a 3000 and maybe a seperate vid capture card if I want.  Ahhhhhh.. finally a fix of AH to satisfy my cravings. =)

Hi Skorpyon, do you have your vid settings in AH set to 32 bit?? I have a voodoo 3000 agp, and after I installed the hardward and ran AH, I was asked what I wanted to do with my new vid setup. I figured this card should be able to do 32 bit, but alas it doesn't. I went to 16 bit and it's worked great.

Ya Sled, I tried the same thing when I first got the card, but have since been running it in 16-bit mode, at different resolutions.  It works fine for a little while, looks great, but then just freezes up.  No problems since reinstalling the Voodoo2.  I am going to see if I can get a V3 3000 in exchange, and forget about all the TV/vid cap stuff, unless maybe I get another add in card for that.  Thanks for the input.
