Used computer from craiglist
« on: October 17, 2010, 01:30:21 PM »
I'm looking at this as a budget way to get playing again.  The seller says its about two years old. He doesn't know the exact mobo or processor except its a socket 775 (I'll find out today) , The monitor is the kicker, my current one is a crt and I would love retire it too. I guess it belongs to a friend and the fella' I'm dealing with is a tech. He's puttina g fresh install of the OS and free anti virus licensed for 3 computers. Anyway seems like a very reasonble price. Just wondering if anyone might have some tips on any thing to watch for or just plain oppinions.

Thanks,

Jenks

you can build a better computer for that or not much more

dual core 2.5? probably not c2d
7200GS? gonna want to upgrade the card to play AH

windows 7 and office 2007? do you get the COA on that?

sounds like someone selling computers without a license to me i would beware

Yeah I doubt seriously it's Win7 ultimate at that price.  Likely it's a pirated copy.

As far as I am concerned, Win7 home premium is more than enough for just about everyone.

I 'built' a system at newegg with almost these EXACT specs for $350 brand new:

Win7 Home Premium
Case/Motherboard/500watt power supply
250GB Hard Drive
DVD Burner
2 GB DDR2 RAM
7200GS Video Card
Keyboard/Mouse

OK So this didn't include Office 2007 (probably pirated), "Perfect Disc 2010" (sounds like junk), or a monitor, but I think you get the idea.  It's not THAT great of a deal, especially if the software isn't legal.

While that system will run AH at very basic settings, you'll be upgrading the video card to get any real performance.  The monitor might have a very high refresh rate which could make your playing experience very miserable (the old  first generation LCD screens were bad for this).  Also the power supply is likely going to be too small to support a video upgrade.  You could easily spend the same amount of money getting the system to how you like it, and THEN still have a dated processor/ram/hard drive.

Personally, I would try to talk him down to $150 for the hardware ONLY (minus the monitor and software), find a legal copy of XP somewhere for $50 or so, and then reuse your monitor, using that to play while you save up for something better.

Thanks for the replies fellas.  I went ahead and got it at a little lower  price and some added value. It is a fully licensed OS btw.
Building.... I just have too many other projects half finished at this time I needed something more plug and play to appease my AH addiction the soonest.

Thanks again,

Jenksie

if you got a COA for both the win 7 ultimate and office then you got a good deal .. would still need to up the video a little but should be fine
