Arizona beats Iowa!!
« on: September 19, 2010, 01:42:54 AM »
Well it looked like so many other Wildcat big games where defeat is snatched out of the jaws of victory.

First AZ gets all the gifts one can, a blocked punt and an interception leads to a 14-0 lead then after an Iowa score an AZ field goal and a kickoff return touchdown AZ is up like 24-7

Then Iowa thunders back into the game, credit to them

Punt bounces off the face of an AZ returner right into a Hawkeyes arms. Next play touchdown Iowa.

AZ answers by throwing an interception that is run back for touchdown

Game tied, momentum all in Iowa's favor.

Enter Nick Foles, the sophmore QB redeems himself with 10 out of 12 completions in the winning drive

Defense puts it on ice with 4 straight sacks.

Whew! with all the penalties and mistakes I'm not sure AZ deserves this game but we'll take the W.

Next week conference play starts for both teams.

Not saying Zona got lucky but Iowa had a damn good chance of winning that once they tied up. I can't believe the sacks to end it out that was crazy lol. It was a good game. Who so Mich and ND more importantly who saw the clock expire before the Mich fake at the end.

AZ did get lucky, that's part of the game.

Some folks say Iowa gave the game away on a silver platter by giving up two quick touchdowns early in the first quarter, but AZ gave it back on a platinum platter in the 4th quarter with a muffed punt for a touchdown and an interception return for touchdown, and the huge momentum swing.

In the end both offense and defense dug deep, and came up big with the win.

Arizona has always been a second half choke team, even back in the early 70's when I was a student there. I used to sell my student tickets for $5.00 back then and figured I got the best end of that deal.

I watched the MSU Notre Dame game last night. That was a heck of a good match up there. Sneaky little fake that got the win for MSU as ND was totally set on a field goal attempt instead.

A Veteran - whether active duty, retired, national guard or reserve - is someone who, at one point in their life, wrote a check made payable to "The United States of America", for an amount of "up to and including my life."

Iowa's a 4th quarter team.  They made mistakes early that cost them, and arizona was able to get on the board without facing Iowas defense all that much.  come 2nd half, Iowa was able to get their defense on the field which is really where they shine.  Unfortunately the O-line didn't do their job at a crucial point and arizona capitalized on it.  was a great game to watch, even if I do live in Iowa city

Edit: more like 5 out of 6 completions in the final drive.

This is the type of game AZ always loses, a big lead evaporates and it's always the other guys making the clutch plays when it counts.

Nice to see them finally win one of these games.

Iowa's offense and defense looked good for most of the game. But due to special teams miscues, they were taken out of their game right from the start. Arizona went into the locker room at the half with a 20 point advantage. Iowa battled back to tie the score at 27-27 with about 8 minutes left in the game. To their credit Arizona marched right back down the field on a series of excellent pass plays and scored. Then their defense came with full house blitz's to close out Iowa's chances.

Iowa will bounce back. They are still a threat to the Big Ten crown.

True, but as much help as they got from your special teams miscues to take that quick lead, Iowa got a lot of help from a muffed punt return and a pick 6 to battle back to tie it up.

Not directed toward anyone here, but on other boards, I get a little tired of some fans saying AZ didn't deserve the win because Iowa gift wrapped it for them.

I'd say it was pretty even in the gift department.

Yeah, I think your team will do just fine.

Maybe a Rose Bowl rematch?

I frequent the Hawkeye Forum and there are very few there that say that Arizona didn't deserve the win. As an Iowa fan we have known that Arizona was dangerous since last year.  We knew before this game that Nic Foles has NFL QB skills. This is a game that most of us pointed to preseason as a stumbling block. The game may have been gift wrapped for Arizona but they had the skills to go with it. If they don't pressure the punter, no blocked punt. If their LB was out of position, no INT. Etc. Iowa only gave up 13 points defensively. In the second half Arizona only scored 7 points, but when Arizona had to make a play they did. This was a good win for Arizona and Iowa aluminus coach Stoops.

Your fans that I've run into in Tucson this week are some of the most gracious folks I've seen.

We've got more than our share of jerkwad fans.

By far, most of yours are a credit to your community and program.
