phone line problem?
« on: January 16, 2000, 08:56:00 AM »
I used to have an excellent connect to AH, but for the past week or so, it has been terrible.  Ping times are all over the place, and a lot of lost packets.

What I've noticed is that I get bad pings and packet loss from the FIRST hop in the route.  This happens with two different ISP's.  It leads me to wonder if the problem might be in my modem, or the with the phone line.

Anyone have experience with this?  Is there some definitive test I can do?

It does sound like something on your end Popeye, I would use the process of elimination-check phone line for noise, use a modem diagnostic program, etc. I will have some pages up this weekend on modem connections/optimization for online gaming. I have some modem utilitys on a disc somewhere,I`ll try to find a small one and mail it to you.

You could call the phone company and have them check out your line.

You could also try reducing your connection speed and see if that helps.

Well, it looks like it IS the phone line, though I'm not sure whether it's "my" side, or "their" side.  I have two lines, and get a good connect on the other one.  (I can't just switch, because it is "her" line/number.)

Any advice for dealing with the telco?  Should I tell them the line is used for data, or pretend that I can't hear Aunt Minnie?

Yes,

Inform the phone company that you are using the line for data and Fax transmissions and your connections have been unstable.

If you are using a respectable phone company (Baby Bells)(well not so respectable but better than de-regulated "fly by nights") They will gladly test your hone line.  Your paying for phone service and quality of the phone line is part of what you are paying for..

Feel no shame in asking them to test your line again if the results from the first tests are not up to your expectations.(always get second opinion, no?)

If you live in England or Europe this will  not apply to you...Due to telecom warlords that control those places.

Your reply to this questions bring up another if you don't mind Pyro....what do you recommend as a connect speed ??  Or do you recommend connecting as fast as the telephone line noise will allow ??
