Just how fast do you think 36,000 tons should be able to change speed and direction?

Excelent point.  Without the ability to put different engines in reverse changing speed will have little, if any effect on the ability to change direction quickely to avoid bombers and have no effect on the ability to avoid a heavy fighter.

Bush on sea trials.  The stearing system is very different on that ship then existed on CV of WWII eara.

Thats CV 68, The nimitz. I believe Bush was CV 77

ww2 CVs could turn very sharp!  when needed.

Clock it with a PT boat and the e6b. I would think that should be accurate enough.

Yes, they could , but notice the common element of the three CV depicted in that picture…………There all ablaze.
