Naming bases,
« on: September 29, 2010, 10:18:35 PM »
ok...dunno if this has been brought up before..........but what would be the possibility of giving the bases names, rather than numbers? is there a reason for the lack of names?

what does everyone else think?

Big maps have around 240 bases. Good luck naming them all, with short, universal names. Just think of the .goto command, easy to mistype with names. Also numbers are much shorter, less cluttering up the map.

I believe this wish was made with Special Event maps in mind.

you are correct sir. if there were a sensible way for it to come to the mains too, that would only be icing on the cake.....but imagine in an fso, or one of the ava type of scenerios, looking got the uss wasp, or the bismarks battle group.
wouldn't that sound about a thousand times more interesting than looking for cv47?

It could be done for fields now by making an alternate clipboard map. Modify the existing map (a .bmp file) for the special events terrain by adding a field name with the field number. You don't have to name every field, but you could name the major ones related to the terrain. The field numbering system is still used in the background. Task Groups wouldn't work since they are in motion.

I think it's a good idea for historical special event maps, but I can't see it in the mythical world of Main Arena maps.

+1 for Special events, would be easier to remember which bases are open for rearm.
