know it's not the first time it's been mentioned, but there are some pilots who would enjoy the addition of nightfighters w/ internal radar, if HTC can model it accurately and lengthening the night to about an hour.

I noticed a mass log-out last night as the daylight dwindled off into darkness in the Main Arena.  I was in the midst of a long Lancaster mission, so I WELCOME the night, as its another nice way to hide.

What I wish we had were lights on the runway, or even landing lights, so I can see as I am landing...it gets a little dicey there for a few minutes with the nose up so high.

Something that's stupid, tho, is that as the area darkens, so does your map.  Why?  Come on, they had flashlights back then   :D

The night aspect is a lot of fun, but if you are in a fighter, like an La7, that G's out fast, the night effect can really ruin your fun.

If we're going to have night time, lets have night time equipment on the plane, and the appropriate lighting.  Its too bad so many log when it arrives, but I understand their reasons too.

It is frustrating that the map goes blank but your dash brightens up...

I HATE night.

I hate dawn and dusk, too.

I've got a TNT and a 15 inch monitor. I have enough trouble distinguishing a plane from the ground as it is (i.e. with the sun directly above). Is a gaming environment that leads to almost %50 of the players to stop playing really any good for business?

I think it's important to remember that the originator of this post is a girly dweeb man.

It pains me to say that, for the most part, I agree with him   :p

I think with a mild revamping that the night stuff could be very cool.

Maybe tone down the auto field acks or something to make base capture a little easier or something.

Its obvious that you've taken something away from the player (the ability to see)  replace it with a small advantage and you wont see the mass dumping when it gets dark

Light sourcing would be beautiful

Red lights in the cockpit are mandatory

Did the planes have Landing lights?  That would be freaking cool!

A note on the reflector site.  That is a light source in itself, and should not get dimmer when I go under clouds or it gets dark out. If anything it should appear brighter due to the relative light around it as its own luminance stays constant.

Two things that I'd like to see for night flying:

a. Red flood lights in lieu of current lighting in the cockpit to help keep the panel brightness from overwhelming the outside view.

b. Controllable brightness for the gunsight.

Overall, night flying adds another dimension to online sim flying.  With it, there are additional challenges that spawn new techniques and tactics that help keep the sim fresh and interesting.  The dusk/night/dawn visuals add a lot to the overall game, IMO.

The P-47 had a landing light just aft of the main wheel well under the port wing. It lay flush with the wing in normal flight and popped down 90 degrees for landing.  Landing lights in the absense of runway lights would be a cool addition.  Also, the position lights on the wingtips and rudder would be nice to see... useful for forming up in the dark, or for IFF--tell your buddie to flash his position lights briefly for you so you can see him.

As far as the gunsight, it seems like we should be able to adjust the brightness (alpha channel) of the gunsight for day or night operation.

I like the night, but I also agree dawn/dusk last way too damn long.

There are a TON of good points in everyones post.. Well, other then maybe the one about laser beams on the sharks heads!! <G> I'm still trying to figure that out! When I put up the 1st post by "night time" I was refering to ALL of it, Dawn, Night, and Dusk. all of it together is WAY to long IMHO! I should have been more clear about that. What I had not considered was that it could be done diffrently and make it VERY cool, and there are a ton of good idea's in this thread. I really like the red dash lights idea. As the white lights just really blind me after looking another direction and then going back to the front view. I already fly at night with all the lights out in my house, but next time I will try tweaking my Gama settings and see if that helps any. But tell me, Does HIGH TECH ever read the message boards? I'm just wondering what the chances are that he will ever see any of these VERY good idea's.

Night flying is AWESOME. I wish they made night be 20 minutes long with 2 minute long dawn/dusk. That orange is HORRIBLE and completely unplayable. It physically HURTS  :)

Using what were primarily day VFR fighters operated routinely in a night environment?

Where are the "realism police" when u need em?

I think night is good.  But then I also like flying with Brucifer and Rarey (Fester on this board)   :)

For me night is a good time to do something different. If I have been flying for a long time, I may switch to a GV, boat, a big gun, or to log.  Coming up for a few flights and finding it rolling into night is not fun, but I think many of the ideas here would make flying better at night.

My picks,

A lighted clipboard that also works at night and under dark clouds.

Dimmed, or red, dash.

A gamma slider to lighten the screen.  I can see much better with the lights out, so it would be good to have a slider to boost the brightness so the lights can stay on, or for play during the day.

Search lights (as suggested by Fidd).
