MG151/20 Cannon pods
« on: October 04, 2010, 01:17:17 PM »
In my research (Willy Messerschmitt's Bio, great designers or something like that) it speaks of the 151 pods being mounted to the K4.  Yes, I get the G14 has the pods option.  Has it been considered to allow them onto the K4?

On the side, to educate myself and maybe other posters, I am sure it is much more involved than adding it to the menu for the K4.  When small modifications like this are asked for, what does that generally translate into work hour wise, just curious.   :salute

Almost forgot a quick jab...  how much would they effect cornering speed at 6g's?

on the same note - if the k4 had a 20mm nose option - I would make it my main ride.  as it is the yak will do.

From "Messerschmitt Bf109 F, G & K Series - An Illustrated Study by Jochen Prien & Peter Rodeike" -

"A series of Rustsatze was planned for the K-4, of which only the R3, the standard range increasing modification with a 300 liter auxiliary fuel tank saw large scale use.  R1 was the planned installation of an ETC 500 IXb bomb rack for one 250 kg or 500 kg bomb.  R4 two underwing gondola mounted 20mm cannon, R6 the installation of the BSK 16 gun camera..."

So while there were plans to standardize the K-4 with the bomb rack and gondolas that were available for the late G series, it looks like the war ended before they got around to it.

At that stage in the war they needed every last mile per hour of performance, and the gondolas were removed if they arrived with them.

Unless you can find decent evidence otherwise, they basically didn't use them.

I hit this in the other post where you brought it up, so I will hit it here as well.  They were used.  Regardless of how much, they were.  If use is a metric for determining credibility in AH, the B-239 would have never been added.

I asked if there was a shot at the K6 with the gun wing, but there is just too much ahead of that in the works.  So, this is the middle ground for me, personally.

On a sort of related topic, are the 20mm rounds fired by the MG151 the Minengeschosspatrone 151 ohne L'Spur type?

This isn't a new discussion, the gondies were cappable of being carried on the K4's wing.

That said as Krusty said all reference to the K4 states that the gondolas were removed if the A/C arrived with them.

I recall reading about 1 JG that recieved their new K4's and were disappointed to see the gondolas andpromptly had them removed. Unfortunately I've been unable to locate this source again,I looked long and hard for it to send to Milo some time ago.
