I can't find any info about HMS Empress sunk that date.

Or maybe...

The ship is RMS Empress of Britain, and she was attacked first time Oct 26th and sunk Oct 28th, carrying military personnel and their families. Of 623 onboard (406 crew members, 2 gunners 205 passengers), 578 survived.

Must be a error made from the souses i get the date.  The ship should be Highland Patriot

The cargo was something else than refugees, though. Thinking what it must have been onboard the ship then, that was a good thing.

Higland Patriot MV was a British Motor Cargo Vessel of 14,172 tons built in 1932 by Harland & Wolff Ltd, Belfast and owned by ROYAL MAIN LINES LTD.
On the 1st October 1940 when on route from Buenos Aires for Glasgow carrying 5,700 tons refrigerated and general cargo she was torpedoed by German submarine U-38 and sunk. 3 crew lost from a total crew 143.
