You're right of course.
About the matter of Saitek software and Win98/Win98SE. I checked and was mistaken. Win98SE isn't required for the Saitek software, but Win98 is in USB mode. The stick can be used in Win95 if you plug it in the gameport.
However, Ron Hunt's
Saitek X36 USB Help Center used to mention that the software only worked without fail under Win98SE, because many people could not make it work even after installing the service pack 1.
Come to think of it, the Saitek Gaming Extensions software is a little tricky. Versions previous to the current one were rather buggy, I hear. I'll bet the current software will work in Win98SP1, if not it probably will after a complete re-install.
(personally I hate having to spend money for a darn OS)
