New stick???
« on: October 11, 2010, 01:14:21 PM »
I'm using an Xtreme 3d pro and I am (and always have) having problems with "nose bounce".

I have a REALLY hard time getting a solution on anything.

Is there a difference between what I am using and say a CH stick as far as the bounce is concerned?

Is this bounce an inherant problem with certain sticks?

Or do I just suk? :joystick:

Absolutely. (edit -> absolutely a difference, not absolutely you suck.  That might be true too, but I'm not stating that ;) )   Go into the joystick mapping screen, and move the joystick down while watching the numbers, and then carefully move it up to the center position while watching the numbers.  Then, continue upwards until the joystick movement begins to register again.

When my Logitech Wingman Force died, I bought an Extreme 3D to replace it.  Fully ONE QUARTER of the handle travel was lost in dead zone at the center.  A certain amount of nose bounce is caused by a fugoid oscillation of the aircraft - but most of it is caused by pilot overcontrol, which is why scaling will help.  But it's nigh impossible to not overcontrol when you have to move the handle 1/4 of the way back down to input a countering down input after over-inputing up (as an example).   Flying with the Extreme 3D is like trying to herd marbles with a wet noodle.

Now contrast that with a CH stick, which is 'tight' enough that you can change your input one "bit" at a time, if you are careful.

I don't remember what stick Lazer had, but he had it for awhile. It started to give out so he asked a bunch of questions on the boards about the CH sticks. He ended up buying the CH stick and he first post after setting it up was something along the lines of "OMG !!! This stick is as smooth as glass!" Well ok maybe not the "OMG" part   :devil

But lazer was a pretty good stick before he got one and was very impressed after he got one.

dont forget if you get a ch stick, you will also need to get pedals. and maybe a throttle too.

Fwiw, I started with a ST290 - which is a decent stick for the cost. Went from that to a full x52 set up - didnt like the loose tension on the stick, so bought a CH stick. The difference the CH stick made is great, I can ride the stall much much longer, much clearer, more defined input etc. I still use the x52 throttle and pedals (they just refuse to give up the ghost) and have no complaints. The x52 js went to someone on the board, and as far as I'm aware, is still going strong.

Personally, I'm glad I bought the ch stick - no problems with reaching anything I need on it, and its super smooth across the range.
