question about overclocking
« on: June 26, 2000, 04:07:00 AM »
Hia
i have one little question about overclocking my PC. my config is:
A-Bit BH6
Celeron 366A
Savage3DBlaster4
SB128PCI
64Mb RAM
Some Samsung HDD (forgot his number but it's about 10Gb or so)
When i had my old HDD (Seagete medalist 3,4Gb) and was trying to put up bus frequency from 66Mhz to 75Mhz (for exapmle) my system shows that everything was ok after boot. Then after 5mins of working in Windows98 (err Winblows   ) i saw blue screen with some VXD error. After reboot i foud out that some files on my HDD disapeared   (including win.com some other system files like *.dll and some files from other not windows directories) i was trying to do the same operation lotsa times with different BIOS settings but results was the same allways
I think that it was HDD problem and i changed my HDD finally, but i didn't try to overclock my CPU so far with it, 'cuz i'm bored of reinstalling Winblows again and again......
meaybe someone know what is going on here?????
Thx for any help

Your HDD was apparently sensitive to PCI clock speed running out of spec.  The AGP and PCI clock speeds are a multiple of the FSB.  The HDD runs on the same clock speed as the PCI bus.  Anytime you run non-spec bus speeds you run the risk of corrupting the HDD.  Most HDDs arent that sensitive, but than some are.  I've always used Maxtors (yeah, IM cheap   ) and never really had the problem.  IBM HDDs are supposed to be the best for overclocking purposes.  They perform well and arent that sensitive to running a little fast.

Hi Bike Killa,
I've heard that if your hard drive acts up when overclocking you can try changing your transfer mode (PIO Mode?) to zero (0).

I understand that this will slow your hard drive performance some, but make it more stable.

I don't know if this is true or not, so take it with a grain of salt (meaning it may not be true) but might be worth a try...

Cheers,
