ATI All-In-wonder 128 PCI????
« on: October 13, 2000, 10:48:00 AM »
My PII-450 Sony Vaio has a Matrox 200 AGP 4 MB onboard.  Board had good video out and I enjoyed making AH Digital movies on my DV camcorder.  I put in a Voodoo 3000 PCI 16MB and improved frame rate but now no video out.  So, what's a guy to do?  Go out and upgrade the entire system for +$2000 or try an ATI All-in-wonder 128 card with 32MB.  Question is does anyone have any experience with this card?

I haven't had much experience with that particular card... however that ATI graphics chip is not that great.

If you can live with 16 bit color, there are Voodoo 3's with TV out available you might take a look at.  That would give you decent performance for a good price.

I have an ATI Rage 128 32mb which is the sam card without the TV out. Running a Celeron 500. Framerate is 30ish sometimes 40+ in 16bit colour -= down to 15 in smoke etc.

Basically give it a miss - poor chipset, drivers improved in stabilty but now slow and god awful support from ATI.

I'm thinking of going to Geoforce MX2 based card as soon as finances pick up - seems great value - don't know if there are any with TV out though.

If you do any gaming, I would avoid ATI Rage-based cards. There are all sorts of known issues in many games with those cards. I had one about a year ago, and it gave me fits. Some games (Rogue Spear) simply will not run on them. If you are restricted to a PCI card, I would definitely recommend a Voodoo card over any ATI card.

If you got a AGP slot in your mobo Hercules 3D prophet II MX card with TV-out could be the answer.
IMHO it gives quite good Bang/Bucks ratio

If theres no AGP slot some company is makeing a external TV-card; Not sure if that could help. I'm trying to find the link.

I had to decrease the brightness of my monitor... Looks like it makes me blind...

A friend has that card, not great!, lots of problems with flight-sims. There are a lot of better choices out there.
