System upgraded......FPS still the same......????
« on: September 23, 2001, 04:08:00 PM »
I recently, just last week, upgraded the CPU and mobo in my system from the Celeron 333/Shuttle HOT-661 to a Celeron 700/Abit VH-6-II combo.  Kept the existing HD, video card, etc.
My frame rates in AH are still the same, with maybe a less drastic drop in smokey areas.
Celeron 700 overclocked to 840
Abit VH-6-II
Diamond Viper 770 Ultra TNT2
256mb RAM
Creative Labs SoundBlaster AWE64

Any ideas on what to do to make this thing sing?  I was expecting my frame rates to jump from 35-45 clear sky, 8-13 in smoke with the Celeron 333, to 80 or so in clear sky, and 20-40 in smoke.
Duh, it ain't happened yet..........

As a side note, I have noticed that when I hit stuff on my FE now, they know it.  Was really getting ticked when I saw my fire light up an opponent and he flew away when I had that old 333 in place.  Now, I hit them and they stay hit.........  ;)

I doubt you will ever see frame rates of 80 with a TNT2....

Changing over to a G-force 2 or 3 will make a big difference for you.

Yep, the TNT2 is your bottleneck.  GeForce2 GTS 64MB cards are running around $100-$125 on various vendors on PriceWatch.  One of those should give you a *nice* boost for not a lot of money.

I looked at PriceWatch yesterday. specifically the GeForce2 cards......what is holding me back beyond the financial aspect (have been effectively out of work the last 6 weeks as the oil field here is like, DEAD) is when I read "DDR" in the product specs.  I don't wanna spend money on a card, then have to spend more money on another mobo if I find out that the DDR video card won't work with my current setup.
Just what is the DDR, and will a GeForce2 or 3 work with the system specs I listed above?

DDR on a video card refers to the type of memory on the video card.  :)  It has NO bearing whatsoever on what MB you can use it with.  (It will work fine on yours.)

DDR is simply another acronym that stands for "double data rate."  It's just like regular SDRAM (syncronous dynamic random access memory), except DDR SDRAM transfers twice the amount of data each clock cycle.

Video cards have used DDR SDRAM since the original GeForce 1.

It's only been recently that main system memory has transitioned over to DDR SDRAM.

I upgraded my PII-400 to a PIII-600 (with a Viper 550) and while my top FPS increased by about 10, when in smoke or in a crowd my FPS did not increase.  I replaced my V550 with a GeForce2 MX 400 and that's when I noticed the FPS jump.

Did you reload windows?  Had a squadmate make the same upgrade and didnt see any frame rate increase untill he reloaded windows.  I had a celeron 433/128megs ram/aopen ax6b mb and a voodoo 3 3000 vid board and just upgraded my cpu to a pentium 750 and the fps jumped by a good 30 or 40 percent.  Then I replaced the voodoo with  a geforce 2 pro w/64 megs of video ram and saw no fp improvement over the voodoo.  It did look a bit prettier though, especially runnin the dx8 beta.  Try re-installing windows over itself and see if that helps.
