New Re-install of Win98SE
« on: October 30, 2001, 11:15:00 PM »
Hiyas everyone,

Oh, week or so ago I re-installed Win98SE.  Since then I have lost a chunk of frames in AH, around 20.  Incidentally, this is also when patch 4 was released.  I get great frames in the TOD and offline, just crappy ones with new patch.

Whenever I turn off my monitor and walk away to do whatever, and come back, the mouse is locked and I have to do a hard reboot.  But when I reboot, I dont get an "improper shutdown" message - just boots through.  I called a friend that knows quite a bit about Win98 and he walked me through the Power Management settings to fix this problem (with harddrive sleep, etc).

My question is this:  Are there any other such settings that need to be changed after a re-install in order to get things rolling like they were?  Like setting your computer to network server instead of desktop?  Thanks for the help!

Hiya,
Yes Nim swap that puppy to Network Server for a start  :)
Then uncheck floppy at bootup
You can also read up on setting ya virtual mem ammount according to your ram amount
I have basic background etc
Power: i set to always on
Then it's normal stuff like mouse/keyboard/sound settings i mess with

A great tool i use is Tweaki, If you can i would suggest this or alike as you can stop stuff from running and using resources  :)

Hope this helps

Have Fun

No real definte ideas but make sure "Wake-on lan" is shut off for your ethernet card either in bios or your ethernet card preferences. And make sure your IRQ's are not being shared.

Did ya install dx8?

Like westy suggests, check those IRQ's.
Virtual memory settings may also help, I have mine set to 64 min, 64 max, with 256 of system memory.

I use "Cacheman" for file system management set to power user.
