The dumb butts on that one really had ZERO excuses...hell you can see the sand bar in the water there in that photo of the Port Royal...my god we have all recruited idiots into our collective navies.

I remember that, I could see it from my house. Perfectly clear weather, too. No unusual tides, nothing to possibly mess up even the greenest JO.

No excuse for Military, as you said Scotch. I know we're all human, but those guys get paid way too much to mess up like that.

Pay must have changed quite a bit since I was in then.  Exactly how much does putting
your life on the line run then?

Something like 1250 a month for an O1 fresh out of school IIRC. But that's keeping in mind I'm getting up to $180,000 to spend on school, plus $375 every semester for books and about $325 in spending money courtesy of the Department of the Navy. If you make it to Flag Officer, you're looking at up to $14k a month, and all of this is not counting housing allowances, COLA, etc.

Dont know aboot the UK, but EVERY US Navy ship is forced to pick up an arrogant OVERPAID "pilot" when returning to port. CIC, bridge WO, everybody deffers to the ninny. So if the ship runs aground, its on the head of the CIVILIAN pilot. Dont know aboot the bubble-head fleet, I was on a skimmer USS Fox CG-33 =)

I would have to get a large bucket of golf balls and set up right along that shoreline.

No, I was just giving a general answer to your question on pay. CG CC is an O-5 billet, so without having my numbers in front of me, I would guess you're talking about 6K a month, +/- about 1k, assuming you're on track for time in service.

I would imagine not having a keel would make maneuvering a submarine in a narrow channel tricky.
