I would say that if you're learning the tracers are probably going to start killing your ability to aim.
It's much better to get in close to shoot, rather than walk the rounds in from further out.
Also consider the hitting power of machine guns is much stronger the closer you are. The longer they fly downrange the slower they go and the less they impact on the target.
Set your convergence to the range at which you kill (if you say 600 yards you're not paying enough attention
) no more than 350, and don't shoot outside of this range. Closer = better when killing folks with MGs!
However, if you're set on using them, only use them for a little bit. Just until you sort of get used to shooting and landing some hits. Then turn them off. You will start thinking about angles and deflection and where you need the target on your gunsight "picture" (and you'll start recognizing a good sight picture) and it will help in the long run.
