Tired of sblive roadkill.....

whats good quality card that is free of sblive crap?

sblive is on its own irq but somes games I get popping and stutters etc.

I tried diffferent drivers and reducing Audio playback/Hardware acceleration through out the spectrum.

Ghost Recon is un pleasent as can be with the poppin even SH2 and il2 have it.

When I get a new card I'm takin the sb live out bac with my .410 and I'm going to shot it continuly till theres nothing left but dust then I'm gonna sweep the dust up then through in this pile of scrap wood I've been needin to burn and cook it a way till nothin.

If I had to go buy another sound card I'd buy another Diamond MX300 in a heart beat. Or even an MX400. Even though they are not made anymore they are fine sound cards and I've never had a problem with the MX300 in the least. All MX400 owners I know feel the same.

I have heard the MX300 does not put out a high enough voltage to operate CH anaolog equipment properly but I ised to use a dedicated gamecard before I bought a Rockfire USB-analog gameport adapter anyway.

They are very cheap now and easy to find online. Last I saw them was for about $19 US at several online outlets. They were originally $100-150 about two years ago.

sblive pc 128 current driver
asus cuv4x 4 in 1 drivers current bios flashed version 1009
win98se
384 pc133 ram
dx 8.1
gf3 visiontek (original) no ovrclock
piii 866 no ovrclock
desk top res 1024x768 32
350 power sup

no where top o'line but I got most of the stuff free a year and a half ago and assembled it myself.

irqs as follows:

0   System timer
1   Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2   Programmable interrupt controller
3   Communications Port (COM2)
4   Communications Port (COM1)
5   Creative Sound Blaster PCI128
5   ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
6   Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7   ECP Printer Port (LPT1)
8   System CMOS/real time clock
9   SCI IRQ used by ACPI bus
10   VIA Tech PCI to USB Universal Host controller
10   VIA Tech PCI to USB Universal Host Controller
10   ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
11   NVIDIA GeForce3
11   ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering
12   PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13   Numeric data processor
14   Primary IDE controller (dual fifo)
14   VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller
15   Secondary IDE controller (dual fifo)
15   VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller

problems are as follows:

popping/stuttering in all games
any voice com causes locks popping/stuttering gets worse
games like ghost recon and silent hunter 2 popping/stuttering real bad but in silent hunter 2 the when in the sub (radio eng room where ever) sound gets real distorted and slow like if you were underwater. Making it unplayable.

adjusted hardware acceleration slider to all positions no joy.

did dx diag alls fine went to dx in control panel and adjusted direct sound "debug level" slider to all positions still same problem.

Hiya,
Outa curiousity goto ctrl panel/system/device manager/creative miscellaneous devices.....if you have Creative sb16 emulation disable it
And are you using slot 3 (middle for the sb?)
If not slap her in middle slot n re-assign irq 5 to slot 3

That caused me lockups in the past but not a loss of sound
As Windose doesn't find any errors in it's irq system it's harder to track any slot config errors

Look at manual n find slot/irq sharings diagram, You want sb in a slot that is a loner not at all sharing with another slot
Asus site down for me here only taiwan site up n i can't follow it   lol

As a last resort try here n search for help if that fails post prob and wait for replies (great bunch of guys that are very helpful)

Hope ya get it sorted

Got very similar setup IRQ-wise but no problems (SBLive Value). In fact, I have never had a single glitch with SB products - the only reason I upgraded my beloved SB16 ISA was ISA slots are few and far between on modern mobos. ACPI IRQ holder crap is sharing stuff all over the place but I don't see how it can cause all the problems with sound not causing problems with USB/video?

My printer is USB so I killed LP1: in BIOS as well as both COM ports since I don't use them - I now have 1 IRQ free...

My sblive is in slot 2 irq 5. I've had it set in each slot 1-5 each time with irq 5. No joy

I had disabled the sblive legacy device when 1 st started trying to work out the problem.
As a matter of fact it was the 1st thing I did before going through each pci slot.

under device manager/sound, video and game controllers:
-ch pro peds
-creative sblive
-hid-compliant game controller
-Saitek x36

dunno whats up................

except I hate sblive (watch it be else where     )

Thanks fellas..........the games are "playable" but its bothering me that I cant get it straightened out.......

Yo,
Try slot 3 again with irq 5
If it's no cure just see if this prolongs the frequency of the prob

Seems to have me stumped too  :(

Ohh well will keep looking at forums for any more help

Wotan,

If your getting stuttering and popping, in ANY application that let's you choose sound options, do NOT use DirectSound.

I use quite a bit of Audio Editing and DJ programming and everyone of them says disable DirectSound and choose Primary Sound or anything but DS.

And before you shoot the card to hell, send it to me.  I need a 3rd Sound card for cueing my music   :)

Ok lets knock out the dumb questions.

1. Have you tried different sets of speakers?
2. Have you tried different sets of headsets?
3. Is their corrosion on your connections either on the card or on the headset/speakers?
4. Are your speakers sheilded or set at least 1 foot away from your monitor and any other devices?

I know this all sounds stupid but you'd be suprised how many times it is something this lame that screws with the best of us gear heads!

Put the card in PCI slot 3, don't let it share and IRQ with ANYTHING ELSE (unless you are running win2k or xp).  Go into the bios and reserve irq5 for pci slot 3 and legacy devices.  If you don't play any DOS games you can also disable the SB 16 emulation (if present) in device manager.

SB cards are a pain in any system to get working correctly at times.

I would not use a MX300 or MX400 in there, those are based on the Aureal Vortex (and Vortex 2) sound chip, and though good for their time, have no new drivers being made and won't work in win2k or xp correctly.  The MX400 WILL NOT work in a VIA chipset MB PERIOD under win2k.  Getting it to work under winme would also be tough.

another thing might consider wotan if you haven't already, Uninstall anything "creative" has installed on your system and reinstall the driver only. Ie.. disc detector, all the recording crap, blaa. Creative labs puts a ton of stuff there. It *really* helped my win2K system. I had a resource issue and creative seemed to be the problem.

Bloom,

Just so you know I have not had any issues with Wink2k or WinXP with either an MX300 or MX400. I ran them both under the beta versions and full versions of the software.

I have had both for quite some time and I will most likely be getting the Hercules Game Theater XP soon or an Audigy card. The MX300 is going to run my BC server while the MX400 made the jump into my sisters computer a while back. She runs WinME as do I for games.

Hi Wotan - I'm very sorry to hear about your problem with the Jive card. (Actually, to be fair, the via chipset shares the blame I think)
I suggest that when you are fiddling with this thing, install (or attempt to install) only the basic driver, not all the other crap that comes with the card. Try to completely purge all vestiges of this driver when uninstalling, before another install attempt. Get the latest bios for your mobo, as well as all updated 4-in-1's and everything else.

I tried absolutly everything over the space of a year, scouring the web for info, but absolutely nothing worked, including tech support. I still have this damnable thing sitting in a box in my desk, unused.

I got a Phillips Accoustic Edge, which I'm very happy with. The card works in any slot you care to put it in, and it would probably work if you put it in upside down and backwards. It's a pleasure. Sound is outstanding, except for the headphone analog out is not the best, although the average listener probably wouldn't notice. Actually, I use digital out to a DAC to an Airhead headphone amp, to Grado 125 headphones. I really enjoy the AE card.

I ran the Accoustic Edge in the ASUS CUV4X for some time without any hint of a problem. I've since given the ASUS CUV4X to my daughter, set to use the on-board sound. I installed the Accoustic Edge in my new Shuttle AK31 mobo with Via chipset 266-A. Works perfectly...
