Treize (pronounced 'trays')- because 'Treisprezece' is too long and even harder to pronounce.

Love that sound.  3 L models and an F.  Gotta love those early small intake 38s, altough the 80th marked L is nice too :)

Isn't Ruff Stuff a G model?  Coulda swore that the ID badge said G when I was "molesting" it in Omaha.

EDIT: NM, looked it up.  It's an L, it seems to have the small intakes though.  I R confused.  I do know that it was repainted to mimic another plane when it was restored, so maybe that's why.

LIGHTNINGS IN THE SKY
Author Unknown

Oh, Hedy Lamar is a beautiful gal, Madeline Carroll is too.

But you’ll find if you query a much different theory amongst any bomber crew
That the loveliest thing of which one can sing This side of the heavenly gates
Is no blonde or brunette of the Hollywood set
But an escort of P-38s

In all the days past when the tables were massed with glasses of scotch and champagne
It’s quite true that that sight was a thing to delight us intent on feeling no pain
But no longer the same nowadays in this game as we sail onto the missing state
Take your sparkling wine but always make mine
An escort of P-38s.

Byron, Shelley and Keats ran each other dead heats describing the views from the hills
Of the valleys in May where the winds gently sway an army of bright daffodils
Take your daffodils Byron, the wild flowers Shelley, yours is the myrtle, friend Keats
Just preserve me those cuties, all-American beauties
An escort of P-38s.

Sure we’re braver than hell on the ground all is well, in the air it’s a much different story
As we sweat out our track through the fighters and flak we’re willing to split up the glory
Well, they wouldn’t reject us so heaven protect us until all this shootin’ abates
Give us courage to fight ’em and another small item
An escort of P-38s.

Being a 38 nut and having never seen a P-38 in the air before, it was pretty surreal to be there in person.

The sound they make is awesome. On the ground it's the smoothest engine you've ever heard and has a distinct throaty growl. In the air it is surprisingly quiet. I'd bet a single P-51 pass would be a bit louder than the four 38s were.

Here's a warm-up video from Youtube.

The original "Ruff Stuff" that Norb Ruff flew with the 80th FS was a G model. If I remember right, Ruff would come out to answer any questions and share stories about the 38 while they worked on this plane. Being taken with his experiences, they painted it as "Ruff Stuff" in honor of him.
