blue "vsync" kind of problems with Geo2GTS
« on: November 01, 2000, 12:16:00 AM »
Really weird: installed a WinFast GeoForce 2 GTS. Everything runs like a greased lightning BUT ace high in 32bit exhibits a very weird problem. I see quite randomly part of the screen overlayed blue, looks like a vsync problem that happens every couple of frames. Quite prone to happen when lots of new scencery comes into view. With 16bit doesn't happen (but of course framerate goes out the bucket). Tried detonator 3 drivers, WinFast drivers, un-shared interrupts, updated BIOS, took most of the acceleration of my KT7 board, ran Porsche unleashed & other demos (all of them run great). Tried the z-buffer and tripple buffering switches. Tripple buffering helps but framerate is dead again. Any clues ?

Try toggling the V-Sync disable option in your drivers.  (Control panel, display).

did that to no effect, very funny, actually I think there is a problem with either driver or the way HTC guys are doing tripple buffering, I sometimes see the moon blinking inbetween the blue overlay so I assume it has something to do with frames they're building in the background or the way they feed textures to the card. Confusing enough, when I change the memory/graphic chip timing with the speedrunner part of the driver, and ALT-TAB into AH back, I get it to run once out of 7-8 times wihtout a hitch until I ALT-TAB or restart it again.

   very confusing that all ;-)

found it after endless experimenation: clock of the card too high, default was 200/333 memory and that screwed things up seems to me (maybe alternatively with system heat). I didn't realize for so long because the speedrunner stuff is very weird and changes willy-nilly the speed so you have to be extra carefull until you get to control the card speed. So my advice to Athlon overclockers & GTS users: get the clock down (188/273 works for me now with still 60-30 frames) and cool well obviously.

Aside from that: GTS is a blast

so my woes continues: after setting the clock low, blue streaks were mostly gone but I had bad stutter problems. After 2 days (and nights mostly) of tweaking I made some progress: looks to me like driver problem with lots of textures or polygons that AH is pushing and somehow somewhere bus-mastering falls apart. What helped to take the streaks away is GeoForce Tweak and the SceneSyncEnable Beta feature of the DirectX driver. I lost about 30% frame-rate in the process but it was pretty unflyable before, either stutter (forget gunnery, couldn';t hit people from 200 yards away) or blue-outs that killed my eyes. So, I'm experimenting with the texture compression and such stuff trying to optimize it still.

Looks like KT7, Thunderbird, GTS owners better get the GeoForce Tweak stuff early ;-)

I had the same problem with my Asus V7700 GeForce2 GTS... and the *only* thing I found to fix this is use the Asus drivers... and check a setting called disable V-sync waiting in the display setup. (NOTE: this is separate from disabling v-sync) I couldn't get the blue shearing to go away with the Det 3 drivers for the life of me.

maybe even the same thing, leadtek drivers don't have the setting you're referring to ;-)

it could make sense for HTC to track  the problem down since it must be something in AH. I tried couple 2-3 other gmaes and didn't see the effect there.

Paxil,
I have the same card but seem to have a different problem.  Wanted to see if you experience anything like this.  I get great fps (40s avg) 1600x1280 32bit in AH.  If I play anything else and enter AH the frame rate takes a hit in about half. A reboot will fix the problem. Noticed yesterday that if I played, left, played, left a few times during the day without playing anything else that I have the same fps hit.  I don't have it overclocked and running stock v7700 drivers.

S!

I'll check this when I get home Rocket... haven't noticed frame rate problems though. I do get strange stuff sometimes when I change res etc... but I haven't changed anything there in quite awhile. I will do some checking tonight. Did you have the blue shearing problem at all?

Nope no blue shearing at all. But I only run the Asus drivers.  I also have it on an Asus mobo.  I just wonder if I am running a bit warm or not.  My smart dr. doesn't squeak so I don't know.
Thanks for checking

Prz, I've been searching for GeoForce Tweak. I also have the blue flash problem.

Do you have an address for it?

Thx.

neee, forgot where I got it  from, it's a public domain thing called GeoForce Tweak and I found it on the WEB just looking for "TNT2 GTS" or such. Try one of the websites specializing in obscure 3d hardware patches ...

Very interesting guys, I run an Asus a7v MB and TNT2 ULTRA vid card.  I built a system using the a7v, duron 700, and asus 7700 GEforce2 Mx card.  When I tried it on AH it worked fine.  (85 fps almost continuously.)  Neither my system or the one I built has this problem.  For the asus vid card I used the driver that came on the CD (version 5.33a I think).  I did set the performance to normal in the bios and run the card at agp2x for stability reasons.  (Agp4x won't make a bit of difference with current memory technologies anyway.)  Sidebanding and fastwrites also off.  I'm using VIA AGP 4.03d AGP drivers on both computers.  There is now 4.03e drivers available, the fix in them is related to winME bugs.  Newest drivers are available at www.viahardware.com    I'd probably suggest you guys try one of the bay cooler fans.  (They are the type of fan that mounts in a PCI slot right below the video card.  They work really well in keeping system temperature down.)

Thx.

Found it as "GeForce Tweak". That extra "o" must have been the problem.

Hope it works!
