curious about bomber evasive action
« on: October 22, 2010, 06:15:32 AM »
In offline missions, do bomber formations always start dogfighting like fighters when attacked (as in all missions that I've ever seen), or does that require the command when you make the mission allow planes to go to combat mode when near enemy planes?

Best.

Their aggressiveness will be heavily influenced by the "Segment Type" associated with the corresponding "Segment" of the "Mission". Using the Mission Editor, you are able to assign every Mission Segment one of about 20 different "Segment Types". The most aggressive is "ATTACK". If a flight of bombers is flying in a Segment that has been given an "ATTACK" "Segment Type", they will strafe enemy facilities on the ground, engage fighters, etc. On the other hand, if the same segment is given a "CRUISE" "Segment Type", they will be far less aggressive, but will still try to defend themselves if attacked.

Here's a thread where this is discussed in further detail:

If the "Can Dogfight" box is checkeddfor a flight, it will dogfight, no matter if it is a fighter or a bomber.  Rule of thumb is not to check the box for bombers (so they stay on course) but to have Attack segments, which makes their guns return fire.

Good catch, Ranger!

Here's a photo of the "Can Dogfight" checkbox:

You get there by right-clicking on a flight then selecting "Flight Properties", when viewing a route, as shown here:
