HardDrive Security
« on: November 24, 2010, 08:57:16 AM »
Is there some software that can secure a hard drive from unwanted visitors.  I have some personal information on my hard drive, and I would like to secure it to prevent anyone from accessing it in case my computer is stolen.  I guess I am looking for something that puts a password on the system that the average hack can not bypass.

The reason I am asking here is  because I would like the software not to effect the game.  I really don't want an application running in the background, I already have Eset for that.  I just simply want to put a password on the computer so when I turn the computer on one can not access the information without the password.  Like a one time password when you boot the computer.

I know windows has a password setup, but I understand it can be easily bypassed.

Thanks

Fred

You might consider an external HD or USB stick that you can lock up.

One easy way to secure personal information is simply to put it into a zip or rar file with a password.

Other than that or a screen saver password for the computer I don't know of any way to secure one drive.

If you don't want to pack and unpack your personal data, use an encrypting program, like the free TrueCrypt, here's "How To". You didn't tell your OS, but even the good old XP has encrypting facilities. Try Google for How to encrypt a hard drive for lots of more information.
