Need new USB flight gear!!!! Opinions needed...
« on: December 16, 2001, 02:14:00 AM »
Hello. Today I just realized that my current CH setup (f-16 fighter stick, pro-throttle, pedals) is obsolete for my new XP system b/c it is the gameport/PS2 version so I must now buy new flight controls. Since they have to be USB I was looking at Saiteks little flight combo. However having rudder on the throttle seems a bit fruity and 3 8 way hat switches seems like over kill. I dont want to drop a crap load of money so I think I am gonna stay away from CHs USB stuff. Any ideas guys?

If you go Saitek X45 or X36 you can't use Windoze 2k or XP  :( and take full advantage of the Stick  :(

Windoxe 98 is OK  :)

If you want rudder pedals with your X45 or X35 you can have them with alittle work  :) http://saitekhelp.simhq.com/   Check this out before picking a stick.

Oops, just read the update page at saitekhelp.  Looks like there is releif for Windoze 2k an XP!!!

Good luck

Yep. Gates made XP freaking invulnerable to any sort of programming game controllers. I guess he called it a "security measure". So that is what I must have USB. Gameports are gonna be obsolete soon anyways.

thanks

The X-36 works fine in Windows XP, its the programing software that doesnt.
If you only play AH and IL-2 then this is a moot point, since you can program the stick inside the game.

Well I really only play AH, maybe I'll mess around on warbirds every once in a while. But if I were to get the new x45 flight pakage then I could just program them through AH and wouldn't even need the soft-ware. Is that what your saying animal?

Same goes for CH stuff - all fine and recognised and all that, no programming though.   :(

I don't think you'll find anything even close to CH/Saitek setups in terms of functionality to work under XP - dual boot works every time though.
  :)

Coop, be careful bro.  Yes, you can program the X45/X36 within AH when running XP.  However, you will NOT get full use of all the buttons.  For example, you will not get use of the knobs on the throttle.  You will not get use of the 3 Aux positions OR the 3 modes available.

As far as the rudder on the throttle goes, I have that mapped to something entirely different than rudder.  I use CH Pedals (not PRO, not USB).

Hope this helps...

Larry- I was under the impression that those rotary knobs could be assigned as regular buttons. Also what about the mouse stick it has? Is that functional in XP? I dont want to buy this stick just to find out that some of the buttons are useless to me.

Ohya. I have the same pedals as you Larry. You didnt have any problem getting them to work with the x45?

Ever considered a MS Sidewinder FF2 joystick?  I have been pleased with mine.  I would prefer foot rudder pedals, but have gotten used to the twist grip.  The force feedback is good too.  Price $89.00 at Compusa (was there tonite).

SW FF2 is usb with a 2 year warranty.  I broke (wore out?) two SW FF joysticks playing AW.  The FF2 is a better design and much more rugged.  The only complaint I have is that there are only eight buttons (all programmable).
