Win ME & Win 98...
« on: April 06, 2001, 05:12:00 PM »
I currently have Win ME & am not to impressed. Have been trying to troubleshoot windows hanging shutdown problem for some time now. I have a copy of Win 98 I could load on the system. Can you down-grade from ME to 98? have them both? Is there any big advantage to having ME versus 98?

If anyone has helpful advice to give a tech-challenged user, it would be appreciated.

If this is something that can be easily done & if someone could describe how to do it that would be awesome.

Thanks,

BgMAW

S!

Safest way is to format the C: and then install the Win98,since WinME doesn't let itself to be overwritten by an older version of Windows. Not happy with WinME either.Just eats resources for snack and gives poor perf in exhange

I'm not impressed with WinME.  98 is/was better IMO.  The only real "feature" ME has is the system restore thing, but even that is a double edged sword.  It works by making a backup copy of every file you use.  This includes temporary internet files, AH files, you name it.  They all get hidden in a directory called _restore.  The problem with this is that you essentially are filling your hard drive at 2x win98 speed, AND paying the penalty associated with the increased disk activity.

you can disable the restore feature, however it will occasionally turin itself back on.  I was never able to delete the _restore folder to recoupe the disk space.  I also had the hang on shutdown "feature".  Never could resolve it.

i just removed ME and installed win2k pro.  got a frame rate boost after the install.  only problem is that my msoft ffb pro joystick, while supported, doesn't have any real drivers available.

Win2K is slower, requires more memory and is difficult to find drivers for most hardware.

This is all in comparison to Win98SE.  If your computer is mainly a gaming computer, I would stick with Win98SE.  98 has its own share of problems, but you can always find drivers for it, for virtually any hardware.

I recently went through an install of W2K and could not find video card drivers (GeForce2) that were both W2K AND DX8a certified of the officially released drivers.  I won't use unofficially released drivers as I have been burned too many times by them.

Anywho,...my 2 cents worth.

OTOH, if you can do a double install, W2K is surprisingly handy even at home use.
I've encountered virtually no problems finding working drivers to my Geforce1 (although I do use NED's..)

So far that I tried, only Worms Armageddon could not start at W2K, which was a documented feature (says it wont work in NT enviroment.)

I upgraded to 256Mb and after shutting down the unnecessary services from it, it seems to work well.

DB603,

check this site: www.ntcompatible.com

Do lots of research, but I must say that I think win2kpro is a vast improvement over 98se, ME and NT4.

Also, keep in mind that AH is really the only game that I play.  Primarily I am running cadd, modeling and graphics software.
