Anyone heard of a virus that blocks DNS lookups?
« on: December 18, 2001, 07:03:00 PM »
I was surfing along last night on my Win98 system when my DNS lookup stopped working.  I went over to my other Win98 system and it didn't work their either.  I tried my Win2k server (links other two to net) and DNS is working fine.

I've heard of virus (viri?) that block DNS lookup to prevent you from downloading anti-virus software... anyone know of something that may be going around?  How about a virus detection program recomendation?

There certainly may be a virus that can cause that issue, but Win 9x has the ability to hose over your dns lookup table all on its own.  There is a way to get it back in some cases, but its a bunch of registry editing, and that only works for some cases.  Best (only) things to do is fresh install of the blasted OS.

God I hate windows some times

Is MSN your ISP?

I had the same thing happen today after work.  I could connect to work, and then going through the network there, connect to the internet (using my MSN connection), but I would get 'server not found' every time I tried to hit a site normally.  I finally clicked 'Detect Network Settings' in the error message, which seemed to make it actually check my network settings, and it worked fine.

Its not ISP related.  My Win2K server is using the same DNS server as my Win98 systems... without any trouble.

I tried the proxy detection and didn't have any luck there.  Me thinks something is porked.

Long shot here, but try restoring url.dll from your install media.

Found out what the problem was/is.  My ISP shut down their old DNS and moved it to a different IP addy.  This was discovered when 24 hours later my Win2k system lost DNS too.

Damn that pissed me off... no notice on it.

I've heard of (and experienced) a virus that blocks access to popular anti-virus sites.  I haven't seen any viruses that prevent communication with a DNS server though...  (It's possible that they exist though.)
