Any tips
« on: November 23, 2000, 08:24:00 AM »
I finally assembled and worked out most bugs in my new PC
pIII 866
256 ram
CUV4X Asus motherboard pc133/vc133dram
Nividia tnt2 ultra 6.31 drvrs
sblive
and was wondering if anyone has any tips to offer to help me optimize performance. Currently I havent ovrclocked anything and am generally satisfied with performance.
I have dsl so connections are fine and frame rate 40 to 50 lowest around 27-30 fps.
I have sblive xgamer in the box and was wondering which is preferred xgamer or sblive
ps I run win98se and dx 8

Hmm, I have the SBLIVE and I love it, I think the gamer only truley shines if you have like 4 speakers or something, cause its supposed to be real good at the 3d positional sound.

Looks like TNT-card is the "bottle-neck" of your system;
I used to have 30-40fps (1024*768 32bit) 450cel and TNT2ultra(c175/m183Mhz).

Now I have PIII 700@933/256megs pc133/Gf2 MX(OC'd to c210/m230Mhz) and my fps are 70-80, in smoke 25-35 (same res.and color depth).

Looks like MX is my bottle-neck too;
no noticable(sp?) differencies between 700 and 933Mhz.

Hi Wotan,

I assembled my system last week, still trying to figure out tweaks, other than OC'ing.
Asus CUSL2
C733@957
GF2 MX @190/195

Your biggest tweak will be a new vidcard, or OC'ing that tnt2. Like Staga said that is your bottleneck.

Staga, what are you using to cool that Gf2mx? I positioned a hole in the side of my case for a 80mm fan to blow on the Gf2mx, but dont have anything strapped to the actual card.

I'm using old Cyrix's CPU fan over the heatsink of MX (size fits perfectly) but gonna change it soon(too noisy,about 5000rpm...)

I did put couple "Extra" fans to my medium tower; power supply and one fan blows out from back and one fan sucks in from front side of tower.

rgr Staga,

I figured you must have something on it, your running it pretty high. Do you use 3Dmark 2000, if so what scores are you getting? I'm pulling low 4600's, I sorta expected alittle better.

 http://www.madonion.com/performance/orb/?publish_compare.shtml?&dprid=792256

5438 points in 3d Mark 2000.
I was using Dx7a and NVidias 6.31 or 6.34 drivers.

edit:
Prophet2MX I'm using is having Huyndai's 5,5ns memory chips(retail vers.).
I heard bulk and OEM versions got slower memory which limits their overclocking.
My speeds are core220/memory230.
