TX DWI surcharge

I heard it has been a huge failure as nobody is paying this steep fine. Apparently over $1billion  is owed to the state by convicted peoples, anyway I just saw this article which says they are thinking of implementing a new idea to replace the surcharge by making offenders attend alcohol education classes instead.

Has anyone else heard news about this, seen any other related articles or know when it may take effect?

They make them attend classes anyway as part of probation. I don't see them waving the fees for something they already have to do. Treatment programs (rehab) are probably more expensive than the fees.

if they enforce it like nj, they will eventually collect.

 nj will go to the point of impounding your car, suspending your lisence, and i think....not sure......but i think they can put liens on your property.....

yep.

part of why it was changed was due to a guy that lived only a couple of miles from me.

 he was suspended for something like 50 years totaled, due to dui, reckless, speeding, etc. yet he kept managing to get into accidents, and accrue more time. he finally killed someone. then the laws got changed.

We have the same thing up here in Michigan, all kinds of huge state surcharges added on to local fines for various traffic offenses for three years, just a money grab by the state.  It does feed our corrections department though which consumes about 20% of the state budget, ridiculous.
