I have the Asus A7V133a with AMD T-Bird 1000....love it!   Get a good heatsink with that combo.

No problems at all Funked.  You couldn't pick a better combo IMO.  Do make sure you get a top of the line heatsink though. I'd also consider having a professional mount it, the rest you can do no problem.  If you can find it, there is a cooler called the "Thermoengine" that is fairly quiet and performs very well.  (If you would like to do the very easy overclock to 1466 Mhz that just about everyone is getting to, check out www.noisecontrol.de  and look at that Silverado.  As soon as you look at the price and then figure in shipping you'll be truely "funked up" though.   )

The one I am looking at is supposedly "retail boxed with cooling fan".  Does this mean I still have to install the fan?  I'm sure I can handle it in any case.

Yes, you will have to install the fan unless they have a pre-installed combo.
WARNING!!!  The advice about heatsinks is CRITICAL!
You are going to need cooling and airflow!...MUCH airflow.

Look here  http://www.azzo.com/test2/cooling.html  for the "Thermo Engine" that bloom memtioned.
I suggest the 7000 RPM model.

Wouldn't the manufacturer-supplied fan be sufficient?

Funked: It will be sufficient for the stock speed it's designed for. Sometimes even past that..

If you want to overclock the bugger, you need a good fan/heatsink combo.

Don't take installing the heatsink to your AMD cpu lightly, it's no childs play!
You can kill the cpu easy with ESD if you dont ground yourself and the fragile core of the t-bird makes installing tight heatsinks dangerous.

Countless cpu's have been chipped during installation. Luckily that doesn't always mean the cpu is dead.. But often it does mean buying a new one, warranty does not cover chipping folks

When installing a heatsink on an Athlon or Duron you MUST be sure that is is 100% flush.  I generally do it this way:

First, apply a *tiny* amount of thermal compound to the cpu itself.  Remove any "stock" compound on the heatsink itself.

Second, be VERY CAREFUL, slowly lower the heatsink and hook one side.  (It's obvious which one.)

Third, very carefully center the heatsink and ensure you are flush with the die.

Now is the tricky part.  Try by hand latching the clip to the other side of the socket.  Often this will be impossible.  If this happens, you will need to use a screwdriver or as someone else suggested (I like this idea, but haven't tried it) a wooden chopstick.

I know it sounds easy, but if the screwdriver slips you can punch a hole through the MB.  If the heatsink isn't perfectly flush you can break a corner off the cpu die, AND not get good cooling.

Hi Funked,

Here is some info for you:
Socket A Installation (PFD)
This is great...no worries

Plus, I installed the Alpha PAL 6035 (II) heat sink, the (II) is the one without the feet. I got the combo without the Delta fan.

Good luck....Oz
