Local pilot dies in crash.
« on: December 23, 2010, 07:59:33 AM »
I know that the pilot community tends to be close knit.  Yesterday, my wife found out that one of her friends, Greg, was killed in a crash trying to land at a local airport that he owns.  This came as such a shock to my wife and I.  We had just seen Greg at a Christmas party on Saturday.  You could not have met a kinder, friendlier man.

The FAA is looking into the crash.  I'm not sure about the plane he was flying.  It wasn't his, but a friends plane that Greg was flying.  We don't have all the details if the crash was weather (there was a wicked cross wind) or mechanical.  I'm sure it'll be months before we hear anything.  Greg was coming in for a landing and according to witnesses, it sounds like the engine cut out and he lost power on final.

Greg was a hell of a man.  Please keep Greg and his family in your thoughs and prayers this Christmas.

You can pull the preliminary information from the FAA website, and then look back later to read the results of the investigation.

Bad day for small aircraft, four fatal aircraft crashes and the sun hasn't even gone down.  Two Mooney-20s, a Beachcraft Sierra, and Obie's friend in a Piper Cherokee.  Very little additional information to gather from the FFA preliminary:

That Mooney went down in 1/4 mile in freezing fog. Not the best place to be.
